Foundations, Applications, and Psychological Skills: A Three-Paper Structure

Pearson Edexcel A-Level Psychology (specification 9PS0) covers the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes through three examined papers. The specification is distinctive in requiring students to study five topic areas at AS Level and then extend into four additional applications at A-Level, building from foundational concepts to applied psychological practice. Paper 1: Foundations in Psychology (2 hours, 90 marks, 35%) covers five core topic areas: social psychology (obedience, prejudice, social identity theory), cognitive psychology (memory models, forgetting, eyewitness testimony), biological psychology (the brain, aggression, biological explanations of behaviour), learning theories (classical and operant conditioning, social learning theory), and the clinical psychology option (defining abnormality, mental health conditions, treatments). Paper 2: Applications of Psychology (2 hours, 90 marks, 35%) covers four application areas chosen from: criminological psychology, child psychology, health psychology, and sport and exercise psychology. Each application area requires knowledge of specific theories, studies, and practical applications within the field. Paper 3: Psychological Skills (2 hours, 80 marks, 30%) is a synoptic paper focused on research methods and skills. It assesses the ability to design studies, analyse data (including statistical testing), evaluate methodology, and apply psychological knowledge to novel research scenarios. This paper may draw on any content from Papers 1 and 2. With 235 resources, this is a substantial archive covering the current specification extensively.

Key Studies, Research Methods, and the Art of AO3 Evaluation

Edexcel Psychology places heavy emphasis on specific named studies — you must know the researcher, aim, method, findings, and conclusions for every key study on the specification. For each study, also prepare two strengths and two weaknesses (ethical issues, methodological limitations, ecological validity, generalisability, replicability). The mark scheme explicitly references specific studies by name. Research methods questions appear in all three papers but are most heavily weighted in Paper 3. Master the following: experimental design (independent groups, repeated measures, matched pairs), sampling methods, types of data (qualitative vs quantitative), levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio), hypothesis testing, and statistical tests (chi-squared, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon, Spearman's rank). Know when to use each test — the decision process (related vs unrelated design, level of measurement, hypothesis direction) is frequently examined. AO3 (evaluation) earns the highest marks per point. Don't just list strengths and weaknesses — elaborate each one. A good evaluation point: states the issue ('One weakness is that the sample was 40 American males'), explains why it's a problem ('This means the findings cannot be generalised to other cultures or genders'), and draws a conclusion ('The ecological validity of the study is therefore limited'). For extended response questions, plan your answer before writing. The mark scheme uses levels-based marking — a well-structured response that makes fewer but fully developed points scores higher than a list of many undeveloped points.
