Four Themes From Start-Up to Global Strategy: The Current Business Specification

Pearson Edexcel A-Level Business is assessed through three written examinations that together cover four thematic areas. The specification takes a progressive approach — beginning with small business decisions and building to corporate strategy and global markets. Paper 1: Marketing, People and Global Businesses (2 hours, 100 marks, 35%) draws on Themes 1 and 4. Theme 1 (Marketing and People) covers market research, market positioning, marketing mix, human resource management, and entrepreneurship. Theme 4 (Global Business) covers globalisation, global marketing strategy, and global industries and companies. Questions include data response, short essay, and extended essay. Paper 2: Business Activities, Decisions and Strategy (2 hours, 100 marks, 35%) draws on Themes 2 and 3. Theme 2 (Managing Business Activities) covers finance (cash flow, break-even, profitability ratios), operations management, and resource management. Theme 3 (Business Decisions and Strategy) covers corporate strategy, SWOT analysis, decision-making tools, and managing change. Paper 3: Investigating Business in a Competitive Environment (2 hours, 100 marks, 30%) is a synoptic paper based on a pre-released context — a case study about a real or realistic business that students study before the exam. All questions relate to this context, requiring application of knowledge from all four themes to a specific business situation. With 106 resources, this archive covers the current linear specification and provides thorough preparation across all question styles.

Application, Quantitative Skills, and the Pre-release Context: Business Exam Technique

Edexcel Business papers reward application above all else. Generic answers that could apply to any business earn minimal marks at A-Level. Every point you make should reference the specific business in the question — its market, its size, its competitors, its financial position. For Paper 3, study the pre-released case study thoroughly and prepare analysis of its strategic position, financial health, competitive environment, and potential challenges. Quantitative skills are essential. Be fluent in calculating and interpreting: gross and net profit margins, return on capital, gearing ratio, current and acid test ratios, payback period, average rate of return, and net present value. Show all working — the mark scheme awards method marks independently of the final answer. Check your calculator work by estimating the expected magnitude of the answer before calculating. For extended essay questions, use a structured framework: define the concept, apply it to the specific business context, analyse the implications (consider stakeholders, short-term vs long-term effects, internal vs external factors), and evaluate by reaching a reasoned judgement. The best evaluations consider 'it depends on' factors — the answer to most business questions is contingent on circumstances, and examiners reward nuanced thinking.
