Perso-Arabic Script, Classical Poetry, and the Iranian Cultural Sphere at A-Level

Pearson Edexcel A-Level Persian (specification 9PE0) examines modern standard Persian (Farsi) through its modified Arabic script, opening access to one of the world's oldest and richest literary traditions — from Hafez and Rumi through to contemporary Iranian cinema and literature. Persian is grammatically simpler than Arabic (no grammatical gender, no case system, relatively regular verb conjugation) but presents challenges in its script, extensive Arabic-origin vocabulary, and the formal-informal register divide. Paper 1 (Listening, Reading and Translation — 2 hours, 80 marks, 40%) tests comprehension of spoken Persian at native speed. The Perso-Arabic script — which omits short vowels in standard text — means that reading comprehension demands vocabulary knowledge to disambiguate words. Translation sections test the 'ezafe' construction (the unstressed '-e' linking nouns to their modifiers, unmarked in script), compound verbs (Persian forms most verbs by combining a light verb with a noun or adjective, e.g., کار کردن 'kār kardan' = to work), and the distinction between formal written Persian and colloquial spoken forms. Paper 2 (Written Response to Works and Translation — 2 hours 40 minutes, 120 marks, 30%) engages with Persian literature and Iranian cinema — including works exploring revolution, exile, censorship, and the tension between tradition and modernity. Set films may include works by Kiarostami, Panahi, or Farhadi. Essays must be written in formal standard Persian, requiring command of Arabic-origin vocabulary for abstract concepts and literary criticism. Paper 3 (Speaking — approximately 30 minutes, 72 marks, 30%) covers themes including Iranian society and culture, the Persian-speaking diaspora, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and contemporary social issues in the Persian-speaking world. This archive of 42 resources spans both current and legacy specification papers.

Reading Without Vowels, Mastering Compound Verbs, and Analysing Iranian Cinema in Farsi

The biggest reading challenge in Persian is the absence of short vowels in standard script. The word کتاب is written 'ktāb' — you must know it's 'ketāb' (book). This means your vocabulary breadth directly determines your reading speed and accuracy. Build vocabulary systematically around the specification themes, and practise reading authentic Persian texts from BBC Persian and Iranian news sources daily. When encountering unfamiliar words, use root analysis — many abstract Persian words are Arabic loanwords whose roots you can decode if you learn the common Arabic verb patterns. Persian compound verbs are the core grammatical feature that distinguishes it from Arabic. Rather than having thousands of simple verbs like European languages, Persian combines a small set of 'light verbs' (کردن kardan, شدن shodan, زدن zadan, خوردن khordan) with nouns and adjectives to create meanings: صحبت کردن (to speak), تصمیم گرفتن (to decide), نگاه کردن (to look). Master the 50 most common compounds and their past-stem forms — translation passages test these extensively. For Paper 2, formal written Persian differs significantly from spoken Farsi. Essays require the written register: use 'است' (ast) not the spoken 'ـه' (-e) for 'is', write 'می‌باشد' for formal contexts, and avoid colloquial contractions. When analysing Iranian cinema — particularly Farhadi's social dramas or Panahi's politically charged films — discuss how directors navigate censorship constraints through allegory, ambiguity, and visual storytelling. Use critical vocabulary: داستان (narrative), شخصیت‌پردازی (characterisation), نماد (symbol), فضاسازی (atmosphere-building). For the IRP, Iran's cultural complexity offers rich topics: the role of poetry in Iranian identity (Hafez, Rumi, and their continued influence), the tension between secular modernity and religious tradition, or the experience of the Iranian diaspora.
