The Legacy Business Studies Specification: Functional Analysis and Case Study Evaluation

This archive of 162 resources covers the Pearson Edexcel legacy A-Level Business Studies specification, which preceded the current Business qualification. While the specification name and structure have changed, the fundamental business concepts — finance, marketing, human resources, operations management, and strategy — remain identical, making these papers valuable revision material regardless of which current specification you follow. The legacy specification was assessed through a modular structure spanning AS and A2 levels. AS units focused on the functional areas of business management: Unit 1 covered marketing and people (market research methods, marketing mix, human resource management, motivation theory — Maslow, Herzberg, Taylor), while Unit 2 covered managing a business (financial management including cash flow forecasting, budgeting, break-even analysis, and operations management including quality assurance, lean production, and capacity utilisation). A2 units elevated the analysis to strategic level. Unit 3 covered business strategy (corporate objectives, SWOT and PESTLE analysis, strategic models including Ansoff's Matrix and Porter's Five Forces, business growth strategies — organic vs external, and the management of change). Unit 4 focused on the global business environment, requiring analysis of multinational operations, international competitiveness, exchange rate impacts, and ethical and environmental considerations in business strategy. A particularly valuable feature of the legacy papers is their extensive use of business case studies. Both data response and essay questions were typically grounded in realistic business scenarios — sometimes based on real companies, sometimes on fictional businesses with detailed operational, financial, and market data. This case study approach develops the applied analytical thinking that all current business specifications demand. The archive also includes examiner reports that provide detailed commentary on where students gained and lost marks — these reports consistently emphasise the same skills that current specifications reward: contextual application, quantitative analysis, evaluative judgement, and the ability to consider multiple stakeholder perspectives.

Financial Calculations, Case Study Application, and Evaluative Judgement

Financial calculations in legacy Business Studies papers use identical methods to current specifications — so these papers provide extensive practice material for quantitative skills. Master the following calculations and be prepared to interpret the results in context: gross and net profit margins ((profit ÷ revenue) × 100), return on capital employed (ROCE = (operating profit ÷ capital employed) × 100), current ratio (current assets ÷ current liabilities), acid test ratio ((current assets − stock) ÷ current liabilities), gearing ratio ((long-term liabilities ÷ capital employed) × 100), payback period, and average rate of return. For each calculation, show every step: write the formula, substitute the values from the data, calculate the answer, and then — critically — interpret what the number means for the specific business. A current ratio of 0.8 doesn't just mean 'below 1' — it means 'for every £1 of short-term debt, the business has only 80p of short-term assets to pay it, suggesting potential liquidity problems if creditors demand payment'. This interpretation, linked to the specific business context, is where the marks are. The case study approach in these papers develops the most important business analysis skill: applying theory to context. Generic answers that could apply to any business earn minimal marks. Every analytical point must reference the specific business in the question — its market position, its financial situation, its competitive environment, its organisational culture. When analysing a decision, consider: is this business large or small? Does it operate in a growing or declining market? Is it competing on price or differentiation? The same strategic decision (e.g., diversification) has different implications depending on the answers to these contextual questions. For evaluative essay questions, use a consistent structure: state your argument, support it with evidence from the case study and relevant theory, consider counter-arguments and contextual factors ('it depends on' the state of the economy, the competitive response, the time horizon), and conclude with a clear judgement. The best evaluations identify the key variable that determines the outcome — 'the success of this strategy depends primarily on whether competitors follow the price reduction, which game theory suggests is likely in an oligopolistic market'.
