Concept-Driven Biology: A Traditional Approach with Modern Assessment

Pearson Edexcel A-Level Biology B (specification 9BI0) takes a concept-driven approach — organising content around fundamental biological principles rather than real-world contexts. This specification covers the same breadth of biology as Biology A but sequences topics differently, building from molecular biology upward through cells, organisms, and ecosystems in a more traditional progression. Paper 1: Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics (1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 33%) covers biological molecules, nucleic acids and protein synthesis, cell structure and membrane transport, microbiology, and genetic inheritance. Questions range from short-answer recall to extended response questions requiring detailed explanation of molecular processes. Paper 2: Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology (1 hour 45 minutes, 80 marks, 33%) covers respiration and photosynthesis in detail, homeostasis (thermoregulation, osmoregulation, blood glucose regulation), nervous and hormonal coordination, evolution and speciation, and ecosystems and sustainability. Paper 3: General and Practical Biology (2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks, 33%) draws on all content from Papers 1 and 2, includes synoptic questions linking different topic areas, and specifically assesses the mathematical and practical skills developed through the core practicals. Extended response questions in this paper carry the highest mark allocations and require structured, coherent scientific arguments. With 112 resources covering both the current linear specification and AS papers, this archive provides substantial practice material for the concept-driven approach to biological study.

Building from Molecules to Ecosystems: How to Tackle Concept-Based Biology

Biology B's concept-driven structure means topics build on each other more directly than in the context-led Biology A. Use this to your advantage: ensure you have a rock-solid understanding of biological molecules before moving to nucleic acids, and master cell structure before tackling physiology. Gaps in earlier topics compound through the specification. For Paper 1, biochemistry questions frequently require precise molecular-level detail. Know the specific bonds in biological molecules (peptide bonds, glycosidic bonds, ester bonds, hydrogen bonds, phosphodiester bonds), the enzymes that form and break them, and the conditions required. The mark scheme at this level is highly specific — writing 'bonds' when the mark requires 'hydrogen bonds' loses the mark. For Paper 3 extended responses, plan before writing. Identify the key biological processes the question is asking about, sequence them logically, and ensure you include relevant molecular detail alongside organism-level explanation. A common error is writing extensively about one aspect (e.g., describing every step of the Krebs cycle) while neglecting the aspect the question actually asks about (e.g., how the Krebs cycle links to oxidative phosphorylation). Read the question stem twice before starting your plan. Mathematical skills are explicitly assessed — practise percentage calculations, magnification calculations, statistical tests (chi-squared, Student's t-test, Spearman's rank), and interpreting logarithmic scales. These questions are straightforward marks if prepared for, but consistently cause problems for students who haven't practised them.
