Why past papers work
The science of retrieval practice — and why past papers are the single most effective revision tool available.
Studies show retrieval practice (answering questions from memory) produces roughly 50% better long-term retention than re-reading the same material.
Students who complete 5+ timed past papers before their exams typically improve by two to three grades compared to students who only revise from notes.
Starting past paper practice at least six weeks before exams gives you time to identify knowledge gaps and address them before it's too late.
The exam revision timeline
A week-by-week plan for using past papers most effectively before your exams.
Read through the specification and highlight every topic you're not confident with.
Begin topic-by-topic revision using textbooks, revision guides, and class notes.
Start past papers — one full paper per week. Mark using the mark scheme immediately after.
Read examiner reports for each paper you complete. Focus revision on your weakest areas.
Timed practice only. Replicate exam conditions as closely as possible every session.
Light revision only. Review command words, key definitions, and formula sheets.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about using past papers for revision.
Are these past papers really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no account, no sign-up, and no paywall. Every paper, mark scheme, and examiner report on Tutorioo links directly to the official PDF hosted by the exam board.
How far back do the papers go?
It depends on the subject and exam board. Most AQA GCSE papers go back to 2017 (when the current 9–1 specification was introduced). Some subjects have papers from as far back as 2012. A-Level papers typically cover 2017 onwards.
What is the difference between a mark scheme and an examiner report?
A mark scheme shows exactly what answers receive marks and how many marks each answer point earns. An examiner report goes further — it comments on how the entire cohort performed, highlights the most common mistakes, and explains what high-scoring answers looked like. Reading examiner reports is one of the highest-value revision activities available.
Which exam board should I use?
You must use past papers from your own exam board. If you're unsure, check your specification booklet, ask your teacher, or look at the header on a past paper your teacher has given you. Using the wrong board's papers is a common (and costly) mistake.
What is an 'Insert' resource?
An Insert is a separate booklet provided in the exam hall for certain papers — for example, a source booklet for GCSE History or a reading text for English Language. Past paper Inserts are included here so you can practise with the correct accompanying material.
Do past papers reflect the current specification?
Only papers from 2017 onwards (for most GCSE subjects) are on the current 9–1 specification. Older papers may cover different content. Always check the specification year before using older papers — your teacher can advise.
Can I use these papers if I'm a teacher?
Yes. All resources link to officially published PDFs. Teachers use past papers for lesson planning, mock exams, and targeted revision sessions. The resources are publicly available from the exam boards.
Are there papers for all subjects?
We're adding subjects continuously. Currently AQA GCSE (35 subjects) and AQA A-Level are fully available. Pearson Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC are being added — check back regularly.
