About AQA GCSE Spanish

AQA GCSE Spanish (specification code 8698) follows the same four-skill assessment model as the other AQA modern foreign languages: Listening (25%), Speaking (25%), Reading (25%), and Writing (25%). The qualification is available at Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9) tier. Paper 1 (Listening) is completed in exam conditions with audio played by the invigilator. It includes a reading period before the audio starts. Questions are set in English or Spanish and test comprehension across different types of spoken input: conversations, monologues, and announcements covering the AQA themes β€” identity and culture, local/national/global areas, and current/future study and employment. Paper 2 (Speaking) is conducted by the teacher and includes a role play (testing specific transactional language), a photo card discussion (testing descriptive and analytical language about an image), and a general conversation spanning the AQA themes. Higher tier photo cards tend to feature more abstract scenarios and expect more extended responses. Paper 3 (Reading) tests comprehension of written Spanish, vocabulary recognition, and the ability to infer meaning from context. A translation from Spanish to English is included. Higher tier also requires students to identify grammatical structures and use them analytically. Paper 4 (Writing) includes structured responses (shorter tasks) and extended writing (150–200 words). A translation from English into Spanish is required at both tiers β€” this tests active command of Spanish vocabulary, verb conjugation, noun-adjective agreement, and correct use of accents. Spanish written accurately, including tildes on words like seΓ±or and aΓ±os, is expected.

How to Use AQA GCSE Spanish Past Papers Effectively

Spanish listening questions test both gist comprehension and specific detail. When practising Listening papers, annotate the question paper before the audio starts β€” read each question carefully, underline the key information you need to listen for, and predict the type of answer required (a name, a place, a reason, a number). This preparation time dramatically improves performance. Spanish verb conjugation is the single biggest discriminator in the Writing paper. The most common errors in examiner reports are: using infinitives instead of conjugated verbs, incorrect preterite forms (especially irregular verbs like fui, hice, tuve), and forgetting to change the verb ending for reflexive verbs. Practise writing paragraphs in different tenses and check each verb individually. For Reading, watch out for questions that ask you to find a word or phrase in the text that means the same as an English word. These questions test vocabulary range β€” if you only know the most common translation, you may miss a synonym. Revise vocabulary in word families rather than individual words. For the Spanish-to-English translation question, accuracy is everything. Write a first draft, then proofread sentence by sentence. Check that your English sounds natural and captures the meaning fully. Literal word-for-word translations often sound awkward and may miss idiomatic meanings.
