About AQA GCSE Drama

AQA GCSE Drama (specification code 8261) is assessed across three components: Understanding Drama (written exam, 40%), Devising Drama (practical, 40%), and Texts in Practice (practical performance, 20%). Component 1, 'Understanding drama', is the written examination and is the only component with past papers available for download. It lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks. The paper is divided into three sections. Section A (theatre roles and terminology) tests knowledge of how theatre is made — including the roles of the director, designer, and performer, and theatre terminology such as proxemics, sightlines, staging configurations, and production elements. Section B (study of a set text) requires students to apply their knowledge to one of the AQA Drama set texts, answering questions about how they would stage it as a director or perform specific roles. Section C (live theatre review) asks students to critically evaluate a live theatre production they have attended. The set texts for Section B are published by AQA and include works from different genres, periods, and theatrical traditions. Students must study their set text in enough depth to be able to answer as a director, performer, or designer, making specific and justified choices about how they would realise the text in performance. Practical components are assessed by teachers and externally moderated by AQA. Devising Drama involves creating original performance work from a stimulus, with accompanying written documentation. Texts in Practice involves performing two extracts from a published play text.

How to Use AQA GCSE Drama Past Papers Effectively

Drama written papers reward students who can write precisely about theatrical elements using subject-specific terminology. Before practising with past papers, compile a glossary of key terms — proxemics, blocking, delivery, levels, pace, pause, intonation, upstaging, traverse staging, thrust stage — and practise using them in context. Vague descriptions such as 'the actor would move around a lot' score far fewer marks than 'the actor would use downstage centre positioning to create dominance, with a slow cross upstage to suggest retreat'. For Section B (set text questions), the mark scheme rewards specific, justified directorial or performance choices. When answering, always explain the effect your choice would create on the audience. A response that says 'I would costume the character in black' is incomplete. 'I would costume the character in black, mid-Victorian formal dress to signal her social conformity and to contrast sharply with the protagonist's colourful clothing, which would reinforce the visual theme of repression versus freedom' scores at a higher level. For Section C (live theatre review), use your theatre trip notes to remind yourself of specific moments, design choices, and performer decisions. Try to recall at least three specific examples from the production and analyse each one in terms of its effect on the audience and its success in communicating the director's intention. Practise writing under timed conditions — 1 hour 45 minutes for three sections feels short. Aim for roughly 25 minutes on Section A, 35 minutes on Section B, and 45 minutes on Section C.
