About OCR GCSE Geography

OCR offers two GCSE Geography specifications: J383 Geography A (Geographical Themes) and J384 Geography B (Geography for Enquiring Minds). Both are 9-1 graded across three 1-hour-30-minute papers worth 70–80 marks each. Geography A is structured by traditional themes: Living in the UK Today (physical landscapes, weather and climate, ecosystems), The World Around Us (global development, urban futures, sustaining ecosystems), and Geographical Skills (skills paper applied to fieldwork). Geography B uses an enquiry-based pedagogy with three papers: Our Natural World (climatic hazards, distinctive landscapes), People and Society (urbanisation, development gap), and Geographical Exploration (decision-making applied to a synoptic enquiry). Both specifications include compulsory fieldwork (one physical and one human) examined within the third paper.

How to Use OCR GCSE Geography Past Papers Effectively

Case studies are the single biggest determinant of grade in GCSE Geography. Both specifications require named, located case studies at three scales: local (e.g., Holderness Coast erosion), regional (HS2 in the UK), global (Hurricane Katrina or 2010 Haiti earthquake). Build a case-study card per topic: location, date, key facts (with numbers), causes, impacts, responses. Decision-making questions (the long-form question on each paper) reward a structured response: present three options, weigh advantages and disadvantages of each, choose one with a justified reasoning sentence. Examiner reports show students who simply pick an option without weighing alternatives cap at Level 2. Fieldwork questions (Paper 3) ask candidates to evaluate their own fieldwork — you cannot revise this without referring to your school's specific fieldwork. Make sure you know: aim, hypothesis, methodology (sampling strategy, equipment used, ethics), data collection results, analysis (graphs, statistical tests where relevant), conclusions, and limitations of methodology. For map skills, the four-figure to six-figure grid reference, scale conversions, and bearing measurement appear on every paper. Drill these mechanically until perfect.
