About OCR GCSE Business

OCR GCSE Business (specification J204) covers business activity, marketing and people in Paper 1, and operations, finance and influences on business in Paper 2. Both papers are 1 hour 30 minutes long and worth 80 marks each, with no tiering. The specification is divided into six topic areas: business activity (entrepreneurship, planning, factors of production), marketing (the marketing mix, market research), people (recruitment, motivation, leadership), operations (production methods, quality, supply chain), finance (revenue, costs, profit, break-even, cash flow), and external influences (interest rates, exchange rates, ethics, economic conditions). Each paper combines short-answer questions with calculation and case-study questions. Quantitative skills (5–10% of marks) test break-even analysis, percentage change, profit and gross profit margin, and cash flow forecasting.

How to Use OCR GCSE Business Past Papers Effectively

Calculation questions are the highest-yield revision area in OCR Business. Build templates for the four routine calculations: revenue (price × quantity), profit (revenue − total costs), break-even (fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit), and gross profit margin (gross profit ÷ revenue × 100). Always state the formula before substituting numbers — mark schemes award method marks. Case-study questions reward business-specific reference. When the stem describes a coffee shop with 200 daily customers, your answer must reference “the coffee shop” or “Samira's business” throughout, not generic ‘businesses’. Examiner reports show generic answers cap at the bottom of Level 2. For 9- and 12-mark evaluation questions, structure as: argument FOR (with case-study evidence), argument AGAINST (with case-study evidence), conclusion with judgement and a sentence on what would change the answer (“This decision depends on whether the business has access to credit…”). The qualifying sentence is what moves answers from Level 3 to Level 4. Maintain awareness of current UK economic conditions — interest rates (Bank of England base rate), exchange rates (£/€, £/$), and consumer confidence indicators. Examiners credit candidates who reference recent news.
