OCR Business (J204): Case Study Contexts, Financial Calculations, and the Extended Response

OCR GCSE Business (J204) runs two 90-minute examination papers, both carrying 80 marks and each accounting for half the total grade. Exam performance alone determines the result — there is no coursework element. Paper 1, Business Activity, Marketing and People, covers the fundamentals: types of business ownership, objectives, stakeholders, market research, the marketing mix, recruitment, training, and motivation. Paper 2, Operations, Finance and Influences on Business, examines production methods, quality assurance, financial documents, cash flow, break-even analysis, and the external environment including legislation, economic conditions, and globalisation. Both papers use case study contexts throughout — questions are set around fictional businesses, requiring students to apply their knowledge to specific situations rather than answer in the abstract. This means knowing the theory is not enough; you must be able to diagnose problems, recommend solutions, and justify your advice using the case study data. The highest-tariff questions (worth 6 or 9 marks) are extended-response questions that test the ability to construct a sustained argument, weigh alternatives, and reach a justified conclusion. These questions require business terminology, real-world awareness, and analytical structure.

Case Studies, Calculations, and Chain of Reasoning: Succeeding in OCR GCSE Business

OCR Business papers are context-driven, so every answer should reference the case study business. If asked 'Analyse the benefit of market research for this business', do not just define market research — explain how it would specifically help the business described in the stem. Contextualised answers outscore generic ones at every mark level. Financial calculations appear in Paper 2 — practise break-even analysis, profit margin, revenue, and cash flow until you can do them fluently and under time pressure. Show all working, because each correct step in a calculation earns credit independently of whether the final figure is right. For extended-response questions, use the 'chain of reasoning' approach: state your point, explain why it matters, develop it further, and link it back to the context. For example: 'Motivating staff through training (point) increases productivity (explain) because employees can perform tasks more efficiently (develop), which for this manufacturing business would reduce unit costs and improve competitiveness (context).' Read the examiner reports — OCR consistently flags that students lose marks by listing points instead of developing them. Three well-developed points with context will always outscore six undeveloped bullet points.
