Edexcel GCSE Geography A: Physical Environments, Human Systems, and Geographical Decisions

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography A (specification code 1GA0) covers both physical and human geography within the 9-1 framework, assessed through three written papers. This collection includes both the current 9-1 specification papers and legacy papers from earlier versions of the Geography A specification. For the current specification, Paper 1 — The Physical Environment — lasts 1 hour 30 minutes (94 marks) and covers dynamic landscapes (rivers and coasts), dynamic development (the unequal world), UK in the 21st century, and a physical environments decision-making exercise. Paper 2 — The Human Environment — also lasts 1 hour 30 minutes (94 marks) and covers urban futures, dynamic development (focusing on economic growth), resource management, and a human environments decision-making exercise. Paper 3 — People and Environment Issues: Making Geographical Decisions — is a 1 hour 30 minute paper (64 marks) that draws on pre-release materials to assess students' ability to make geographical decisions using data, evidence, and analysis. The legacy papers in this collection were assessed through a unitised structure with Units 1, 2, 3, and 4 at Foundation and Higher tiers. These older papers covered similar physical and human geography content but used a different assessment format, with shorter questions and less emphasis on extended geographical writing. A notable feature of Edexcel Geography A is the strong emphasis on geographical skills throughout all three papers — map reading, graph interpretation, statistical analysis, and the use of photographic evidence. Students who regularly practise these skills alongside content revision are significantly better prepared for the exam. Fieldwork underpins the geographical skills assessed in Paper 3, though the fieldwork itself is conducted during the course and not separately assessed through a written examination component.

Skills-First Revision: Making Edexcel GCSE Geography A Past Papers Work Harder for You

Geographical skills questions appear on every Edexcel Geography A paper and are some of the most reliably high-scoring questions for well-prepared students. Practise reading OS maps (including six-figure grid references, contour interpretation, and measurement of distances), interpreting graphs and charts, calculating percentage change, and using photographic sources to draw geographical inferences. For Paper 3's decision-making exercise, practise working through pre-release resource booklets from past years before attempting the questions. The skill of using provided evidence to support a geographical argument — rather than relying on memorised knowledge alone — is what Paper 3 specifically assesses. Work through the pre-release materials in detail, annotating key data and trends before the actual paper. Extended writing questions (6-9 marks) in Papers 1 and 2 reward structured responses that use specific case studies, statistical evidence, and geographical terminology. Avoid vague generalisations — examiners credit precise facts (specific place names, statistics from your case studies, dates of events) much more than general statements. For physical geography topics (rivers, coasts, glaciation), practise drawing and annotating diagrams to support your written responses. Edexcel Geography A papers frequently include space for annotated diagrams, and well-labelled sketches can earn marks in their own right while also supporting your written analysis. For the Edexcel Geography A pre-release Paper 3, read the resource booklet multiple times in the weeks before the exam, becoming familiar with all the data, maps, and evidence provided. Students who have thoroughly engaged with the pre-release materials consistently outperform those who see the booklet for the first time in the exam.
