About Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics (specification 1PH0) is one of the three separate sciences. Two 1-hour-45-minute papers, each worth 100 marks, with Foundation (1–5) and Higher (4–9) tiers. Paper 1 covers topics 1–7: key concepts in physics, motion and forces, conservation of energy, waves, light and the electromagnetic spectrum, radioactivity, astronomy. Paper 2 covers topics 1, 8–15: energy, forces, magnetism and the motor effect, electromagnetic induction, particle model, forces and matter. Eight core practicals are integral to the specification. Mathematical skills account for 30% of total marks at Higher tier and around 20% at Foundation.

How to Use Pearson Edexcel GCSE Physics Past Papers Effectively

Mathematical fluency separates 7–9 grade Edexcel Physics from 4–6. Higher tier candidates must memorise (no formula sheet provided for these): kinetic energy = ½mv²; gravitational potential energy = mgh; momentum = mv; work done = force × distance; energy transferred (electrical) = current × potential difference × time. Drill rearrangement of each. Unit conversion is examined every paper. Practise: kJ ↔ J, MJ ↔ J, kW ↔ W, hours ↔ seconds, km ↔ m. Mark schemes deduct for missing units in final answers. For required practicals, the most-tested are Resistance of a Wire (Ohm's law, varying length), Specific Heat Capacity, and Density. Know the variables, equipment, expected pattern, and one source of error per practical. For extended-response questions, link three concepts with cause-effect chains. Don't write ‘the temperature increases’ — write ‘kinetic energy of particles increases, average speed increases, rate of collisions per unit area on container walls increases, raising pressure’. For astronomy and radioactivity questions, memorise classification: alpha (high ionisation, low penetration), beta (medium ionisation, medium penetration), gamma (low ionisation, high penetration). Half-life calculations recur — practise both the formula and graphical method.
