About Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography

Pearson Edexcel offers two GCSE Geography specifications: 1GA0 Geography A (Geographical Themes and People) and 1GB0 Geography B (Geographical Investigations: Fieldwork and UK Challenges). Both are 9-1 graded across three 1-hour-30-minute papers worth 94–96 marks each. Geography A is structured around physical, human and global geography: The Physical Environment (coastal, river, weather hazards), The Human Environment (urban issues, development gap, resource management), Geographical Investigations (UK fieldwork, plus a synoptic decision-making issue). Geography B applies an enquiry-led approach: Global Geographical Issues, UK Geographical Issues, and People and Environment Issues (with a decision-making paper). Both specifications include compulsory fieldwork — one physical and one human — examined within Paper 3.

How to Use Pearson Edexcel GCSE Geography Past Papers Effectively

Case studies are the single biggest determinant of grade in GCSE Geography. Both Edexcel specifications require named, located case studies at three scales: local (Holderness coastal management, Birmingham urban regeneration), regional (Olympic Park 2012 legacy), global (Boscastle floods 2004, Christchurch earthquake 2011, Lagos megacity growth). Build a case-study card per topic with location, date, key facts including statistics, causes, impacts, responses. Decision-making questions reward a structured response. Present three options, weigh advantages and disadvantages of each, choose one with a justified reasoning sentence. Examiner reports show students who pick an option without weighing alternatives cap at Level 2. Fieldwork questions (Paper 3) ask candidates to evaluate their own fieldwork — you cannot revise this without referring to your school's specific fieldwork. Make sure you know: aim, hypothesis, methodology including sampling strategy, data collection results, analysis (graphs, statistical tests where used), conclusions, and limitations of methodology. Map skills are easy marks: drill four-figure to six-figure grid references, scale conversions, bearing measurement, and contour-line interpretation. These appear on every paper and are highly mark-efficient revision.
