GCSE Modern Greek at Edexcel: Heritage Language Assessment Across Four Skills

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Greek assesses Modern Greek across four skills — Listening (Paper 1), Speaking (Paper 2), Reading (Paper 3), and Writing (Paper 4) — at Foundation and Higher tiers. With 197 resources, the archive spans the current 9-1 specification and legacy unitised papers (Units 1–4), and includes authentic MP3 listening recordings of native Greek speakers. GCSE Modern Greek at Edexcel is primarily taken by heritage speakers — students of Greek family background with prior exposure to the language at home or in community Greek schools. The examination assesses contemporary spoken and written Modern Greek, covering the specification themes of Identity and Culture, Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest, and Current and Future Study and Employment. Paper 1 — Listening — tests comprehension of native Greek speakers at natural conversational speed. Both standard and extra time (25% additional) recordings are available, alongside tracked recordings useful for detailed analysis. Foundation and Higher tier recordings differ in complexity and length. Paper 2 — Speaking — is a teacher-conducted oral examination covering role play, photo card discussion, and general conversation on specification themes. Mark schemes are included in the archive. Paper 3 — Reading — assesses comprehension of written Modern Greek across a range of text types. Questions are answered in both Greek and English depending on the question type. Paper 4 — Writing — includes structured writing tasks, an extended composition, and a translation from English to Greek. Accurate use of Greek script, grammar, and vocabulary is assessed throughout. The legacy unitised papers (Units 1–4) provide additional practice material across all four skills, using the previous specification's question format.

Formal Register, Dialect, and Exam Technique in GCSE Modern Greek

For GCSE Modern Greek listening practice, use the MP3 files in this archive systematically. Even students who are comfortable conversational speakers of Greek may find the formal register and topic vocabulary of the examination challenging — listening specifically to the examination recordings builds familiarity with the question types and the vocabulary range tested at each tier. Reading comprehension at GCSE Greek requires strong vocabulary knowledge across the specification themes. Create a vocabulary list organised by theme (personal relationships, work and employment, environmental issues, technology and media) and practise recalling these words regularly. Heritage speakers often have strong spoken vocabulary but may find formal written registers and topic-specific terminology less familiar. For Writing Paper 4, the translation from English to Greek requires careful attention to grammar: verb agreement, case endings, gendered nouns, and the correct use of formal and informal registers. Practise translations from past papers, then compare your output to the mark scheme noting both the acceptable answers and the common errors highlighted in the examiner reports. For Speaking, prepare structured responses for all likely photo card themes and general conversation topic areas. Use discourse markers and connecting phrases to develop your answers beyond simple statements: 'Εκτός από αυτό...', 'Από την άλλη μεριά...', 'Κατά τη γνώμη μου...' signal sophistication to the examiner. Use the legacy unit papers to supplement your practice — the topic content and skill requirements are broadly consistent with the current specification despite the format differences.
