About Pearson Edexcel GCSE Combined Science

Pearson Edexcel GCSE Combined Science (specification 1SC0) is the double-award science qualification. Students gain a single qualification graded on a 17-point scale from 1-1 to 9-9 (e.g., 9-9, 7-6, 5-4, 4-4). Assessment is six 1-hour-10-minute papers: two each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each paper is worth 60 marks for a total of 360. Foundation (1-1 to 5-5) and Higher (4-4 to 9-9) tiers are available. Content covers the same topic areas as the three separate sciences but with reduced depth. Students cover 16 core practicals (compared to 24 in Triple). The most common reason to choose Combined Science is curriculum-time — it earns two GCSEs from two science option blocks rather than three.

How to Use Pearson Edexcel GCSE Combined Science Past Papers Effectively

Combined Science demands vocabulary breadth across three sciences. Build three flashcard decks with the Edexcel-specified key terms; review at least 30 cards per day in the final 12 weeks. For Higher tier, the 6-mark extended-response question is worth 10% of each paper's marks. The mark scheme uses three levels. Reach Level 3 by chaining cause-effect-consequence with two pieces of subject-specific terminology per paragraph. Examiner reports show that adding more facts does not raise marks — conciseness with the right terms beats length. Core practicals are heavily examined and predictable because the practicals themselves are fixed. For each of the 16 core practicals, write a half-page summary covering aim, variables, equipment, hazards, expected results, sources of error. Maths in physics and chemistry papers is where many candidates lose marks. Re-arranging equations, converting cm³ to dm³, and writing answers in standard form are core skills. Drill these mechanically. Use the Edexcel-published examiner reports for each series — they list, year by year, specific mistakes most candidates made.
