Performing, Composing, and Appraising: The Three Strands of WJEC A Level Music

WJEC AS/A Level Music integrates three core musical disciplines — performing, composing, and appraising — within a six-unit framework. The qualification accommodates a wide range of musical traditions and instruments, valuing practical musicianship alongside analytical rigour. Unit 1 — Performing (AS, NEA, 12% of A Level) — assesses a solo or ensemble recital of at least six minutes. Unit 2 — Composing (AS, NEA, 12%) — requires candidates to compose two pieces: one in response to a brief and one free composition. Unit 3 — Appraising (AS, written, 1 hour 30 minutes, 16%) — is the AS listening and analysis paper, testing aural perception, score reading, and contextual knowledge through dictation exercises and set-work questions. At A2, Unit 4 — Performing (NEA, 18%) — demands a recital of at least ten minutes demonstrating advanced technical and interpretive skill. Unit 5 — Composing (NEA, 18%) — extends the compositional challenge with longer, more sophisticated works. Unit 6 — Appraising (A2, written, 2 hours, 24%) — is the advanced listening paper, probing deeper analytical understanding and broader stylistic awareness across Western classical and wider musical traditions. The 31 resources include appraising papers, mark schemes, and audio resource booklets.

Aural Accuracy and Stylistic Context: Preparing for WJEC Music Appraising

The appraising papers demand accurate aural skills. Practise melodic and rhythmic dictation daily, starting with simple diatonic phrases and progressing to chromatic passages. Use past listening papers with the provided audio, writing your answers under timed conditions. After marking, replay the excerpts and identify exactly where your perception diverged from the printed answer. Set-work analysis requires both technical and contextual knowledge. For each set work, prepare notes covering its historical context, the composer’s stylistic language, harmonic vocabulary, structural design, and any notable orchestrational features. In the examination, answers that connect technical observations (e.g., a shift to the relative minor) to expressive purpose (e.g., to heighten dramatic tension) receive stronger marks than purely descriptive responses. Unit 6 includes questions on unfamiliar music. Develop your analytical vocabulary by listening to a wide range of styles — Baroque concerto grosso, Classical sonata form, Romantic orchestral music, twentieth-century serialism, and non-Western traditions. For each, identify characteristic textures, harmonic patterns, and formal structures so that you can respond confidently to music you have not previously encountered.
