Engineering Principles and Designed Solutions: WJEC D&T Engineering Design

WJEC AS/A Level Design and Technology: Engineering Design focuses on the application of engineering principles to the design and manufacture of functional products. The qualification emphasises mathematical analysis, mechanical understanding, and systematic problem-solving alongside practical design skills. The AS written examination (Unit 1, ninety minutes, worth one quarter of the full A Level) covers engineering materials — metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites — alongside manufacturing processes suited to engineering contexts, mechanical principles such as forces, moments, stress, and strain, and the role of CAD/CAM in modern production. Unit 2 (AS, NEA, 25%) requires an engineering design-and-make project. At A2, the second written examination (Unit 3, also ninety minutes at 25%) extends into electronic and pneumatic systems, structural analysis, quality assurance, and the environmental and social responsibilities of engineers. Unit 4 (A2, NEA, 25%) is an extended engineering project demonstrating advanced design and manufacturing competence. Thirteen resources are available, covering both written examinations with their corresponding mark schemes.

Combining Calculation with Design Thinking for WJEC Engineering Design

Engineering Design papers often include calculation-based questions. Practise problems involving stress (σ = F/A), strain (ε = ΔL/L), Young’s modulus (E = σ/ε), and moments (force × distance). Always show full working, use correct SI units, and present your final answer to an appropriate number of significant figures — marks are awarded at each stage of the calculation. Materials selection questions require you to match material properties to functional requirements. When asked to recommend a material for a specific application, state the required properties (e.g., high tensile strength, corrosion resistance, low density), identify a suitable material, and justify your choice with reference to those properties. Comparisons between candidate materials demonstrate the evaluative thinking examiners seek. Systems questions (electronic circuits, pneumatic systems) test both theoretical understanding and practical application. Draw clear circuit or system diagrams with standard symbols, label all components, and explain the function of each element within the overall system. Practise converting between block diagrams and detailed circuit schematics.
