Circuit Principles and Applied Electronics: WJEC’s Specialist Electronics Qualification
WJEC AS/A Level Electronics is one of the few standalone electronics qualifications available in the UK, providing specialist depth that goes well beyond the electronics content found in physics or D&T courses. The qualification is available in both English and Welsh medium.
Component 1 — Principles of Electronics (2 hours 15 minutes, 50% of A Level) — covers analogue and digital circuit theory: resistive circuits, Kirchhoff’s laws, capacitors, operational amplifiers, logic gates, flip-flops, counters, and semiconductor devices. Questions combine theoretical analysis with practical circuit design, often requiring candidates to calculate component values, predict circuit behaviour, or troubleshoot a faulty system.
Component 2 — Application of Electronics (2 hours 15 minutes, 50%) — applies these principles to real-world systems: power supply design, signal processing, communication systems, microcontroller programming, and the integration of analogue and digital subsystems. Resource materials (circuit diagrams, datasheets) are provided during the examination.
The 37 resources include papers, mark schemes, and circuit resource materials for both components.

Mastering Circuit Analysis and System Design for WJEC Electronics
Circuit analysis is the backbone of both components. Practise applying Kirchhoff’s current and voltage laws to circuits with multiple loops and nodes until you can set up simultaneous equations instinctively. For op-amp circuits, memorise the gain formulae for inverting (–Rf/Rin) and non-inverting (1 + Rf/Rin) configurations, and practise calculating output voltages for given input signals.
Digital electronics questions test both combinational logic (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR gates, Karnaugh maps, Boolean algebra) and sequential logic (D-type flip-flops, JK flip-flops, counters, shift registers). Practise deriving truth tables from circuit diagrams and simplifying Boolean expressions using algebraic manipulation and Karnaugh maps.
Component 2 frequently provides datasheets or circuit diagrams as stimulus material. Practise extracting relevant information from datasheets — pin configurations, maximum ratings, typical operating conditions — and applying it to design problems. Time management is critical in a 2-hour 15-minute paper with resource material: allocate reading time at the start and move efficiently through calculation questions.
