Specimen Photographs and Map Extracts for GL1 Foundation Practice

This collection provides the resource booklets distributed alongside the GL1 Foundation examination papers. These booklets contain rock and mineral specimen photographs, geological map extracts, fossil plates, and thin-section photomicrographs that candidates must interpret to answer the associated questions. The photographs replicate the experience of examining hand specimens in the field or laboratory, testing whether candidates can identify minerals and rocks from visual evidence alone. Map extracts present unfamiliar areas where candidates apply their knowledge of outcrop patterns, dip, and geological structure. Ten resource booklets are available, accompanying GL1 Foundation papers from multiple examination sessions.

Getting the Most from GL1 Specimen and Map Resources

Pair each resource booklet with its corresponding question paper and work through them together. The specimen photographs in GL1 booklets are typically high-resolution images showing texture, colour, and structural features. Train yourself to assess these systematically: start with overall texture (crystalline, clastic, foliated), then examine individual grain characteristics, and finally consider the geological context suggested by the photograph. Fossil plates require recognition of phylum-level classification and, where possible, more specific identification. Familiarise yourself with the key diagnostic features of brachiopods (biconvex versus plano-convex shells, pedicle opening), bivalves (equivalve versus inequivalve), ammonites (suture patterns), trilobites (cephalon, thorax, pygidium), and corals (septae arrangement). Map extracts in the resource booklets may show features not encountered in classroom examples. Approach unfamiliar maps methodically: read the key first, identify rock types from their symbols, trace boundaries, and look for structural indicators such as fault lines or unconformities before attempting the questions.
