Textiles Science and Fashion Design: WJEC’s Specialist D&T Pathway

WJEC AS/A Level Design and Technology: Fashion and Textiles focuses on the design, production, and analysis of textile products within the fashion industry. The written paper tests theoretical knowledge of fibres, fabrics, construction techniques, and the fashion industry's social and environmental responsibilities. The A2 examined component (Unit 3, a ninety-minute paper carrying twenty-five per cent of the overall A Level grade) covers advanced textiles science — fibre properties, fabric construction methods, finishing techniques — alongside the impact of technology on textile production, sustainability in fashion, and the design and cultural influences shaping contemporary fashion. Questions require candidates to apply technical knowledge to design scenarios. Practical components (NEA) at both AS and A2 level assess design-and-make projects where candidates create textile products demonstrating creativity, technical skill, and understanding of the target market. Six resources are available, comprising past papers and mark schemes for the A2 examined component.

Fibres, Fabrics, and Industry Context for WJEC Fashion and Textiles

Know the properties of natural fibres (cotton, wool, silk, linen) and synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane) in detail. For each fibre, learn its source, key properties (absorbency, strength, drape, crease resistance), care requirements, and typical end uses. Examiners value answers that explain why a fibre’s molecular structure produces its observable properties. Fabric construction methods — weaving (plain, twill, satin), knitting (warp, weft), felting, bonding, and laminating — appear frequently. Practise sketching the interlacing patterns for each weave and explaining how the structure affects the fabric’s strength, stretch, and appearance. Sustainability questions demand specific industry knowledge. Discuss fast fashion versus slow fashion, the environmental cost of textile dyeing, the potential of recycled and biodegradable fibres, and certification schemes such as GOTS and Oeko-Tex. Concrete examples — named brands, specific initiatives, quantified environmental impacts — elevate your answers above generality.
