Four-Unit WJEC Mathematics: Pure and Applied Strands with the Welsh Regulatory Framework

WJEC A Level Mathematics follows a four-unit structure regulated by Qualifications Wales. Units 1 and 2 form the AS qualification, while Units 3 and 4 complete the full A Level. Pure Mathematics A (Unit 1) and Pure Mathematics B (Unit 3) cover proof, algebra, coordinate geometry, sequences, trigonometry, exponentials, differentiation, and integration. Applied Mathematics A (Unit 2) and Applied Mathematics B (Unit 4) split between statistics and mechanics, with each unit combining elements of both applied strands. The AS units collectively contribute 40% of the A Level grade, while the A2 units contribute 60%. Each written examination lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and carries 120 marks. Calculators are permitted throughout, but the mark schemes frequently distinguish between method marks (awarded for correct working regardless of the final answer) and accuracy marks (dependent on a fully correct response). WJEC Mathematics papers are set in both English and Welsh, reflecting the board’s dual-language mandate. With 61 resources spanning accessible-format versions alongside standard papers, the collection covers multiple examination sessions.

Balancing Pure Rigour with Applied Versatility Across Four WJEC Maths Units

The four-unit structure means you face two pure papers and two applied papers. Resist the temptation to revise them as four separate subjects — the applied units deliberately draw on pure techniques. Mechanics problems require confident differentiation and integration, while statistics questions demand fluent algebra when manipulating probability distributions. For Pure Mathematics, build a formula card of key results you must memorise (the papers do not provide a formula booklet in the same way as some other boards). Quadratic formula, factor theorem, logarithmic laws, differentiation rules, and standard integrals should all be automatic. Then practise applying them in unfamiliar contexts — WJEC examiners favour multi-step problems where the challenge lies in recognising which technique to deploy. Applied Mathematics units combine statistics and mechanics within a single paper. Time management is critical: allocate your minutes proportionally to the marks, and do not allow a tricky mechanics question to consume time you need for a straightforward statistics calculation. Practise switching between the two applied strands within a timed session. Mark schemes for WJEC papers award method marks generously. If you cannot complete a calculation, show every step you can — a correct setup with an arithmetic slip can still earn the majority of the marks.
