Stratigraphic Columns and Fossil Evidence for GL4 Practice

This collection provides the resource booklets accompanying the GL4 Geological Record examination papers. These booklets contain stratigraphic columns, correlation charts, fossil photographs, palaeogeographic maps, and geological cross-sections that form the evidential basis for examination questions. Candidates use these materials to practise the core skills of GL4: correlating strata between locations, identifying fossils to determine relative age, interpreting depositional environments from sedimentary evidence, and reconstructing palaeogeographic settings. Eight resource booklets are available, covering GL4 papers from multiple sessions.

Working with Correlation Charts and Fossil Plates in GL4 Resources

Correlation charts in GL4 booklets typically present two or more stratigraphic columns from different locations. Before attempting the questions, compare the columns systematically: identify any shared lithological units, mark biostratigraphically significant fossils, and note unconformities or gaps in the record. Use coloured pencils to highlight correlated horizons across columns. Fossil plates require quick, confident identification. The GL4 booklets often include ammonites (note suture complexity for dating), graptolites (number of stipes and branching pattern), brachiopods, corals, and plant fossils. Focus on the diagnostic features that distinguish zone fossils from similar species. Palaeogeographic maps in the resource booklets show the distribution of land, sea, and different depositional environments at specific points in geological time. When interpreting these, consider the plate tectonic setting, the latitude of Britain at that time, and how both factors controlled climate and sedimentation.
