Spanish Language Skills Across Identity, Culture, and Contemporary Wales

WJEC GCSE Spanish follows the same four-unit structure as WJEC's other modern foreign languages, assessing speaking, listening, reading, and writing as separate components each worth 25%. This equal weighting ensures that all language skills are valued and prepared for independently. Unit 1 (Speaking) is a controlled assessment testing conversation, presentation, and spontaneous interaction. Unit 2 (Listening, approximately 35–45 minutes) tests comprehension of spoken Spanish at native speed. Unit 3 (Reading, approximately 1 hour) tests comprehension of written Spanish texts. Unit 4 (Writing, approximately 1 hour) tests the ability to communicate in written Spanish across different formats and registers. Foundation tier covers grades G–D and Higher tier covers grades D–A*. The specification contexts — Identity and Culture, Wales and the World, and Current and Future Study and Employment — are shared with French and German but the cultural content is distinct, drawing on both peninsular Spanish and Latin American contexts. Students may encounter texts about Spanish-speaking communities' connections with Wales, festivals and traditions from across the Hispanic world, and contemporary social issues in Spain and Latin America. The Spanish specification includes topics unique to the language: the distinction between tú and usted forms, the use of ser and estar (both meaning 'to be' but used differently), and cultural awareness of regional variation within Spain. This archive contains 112 resources from Summer 2018 to Summer 2023.

Ser vs Estar Precision, Preterite and Imperfect Distinction, and Listening for Rapid Speech

The ser/estar distinction is the most commonly tested grammatical concept in WJEC Spanish papers and the most frequent source of errors. Ser is for permanent or defining characteristics (Soy galés — I am Welsh), estar is for temporary states and locations (Estoy cansado — I am tired). The complications arise with adjectives that change meaning: 'ser aburrido' (to be boring) vs 'estar aburrido' (to be bored). Build a reference sheet of common ser/estar pairs and test yourself regularly. At Higher tier, the preterite/imperfect distinction in the past tense is essential for grade A/A*. The preterite narrates completed events (Fui al cine — I went to the cinema), while the imperfect describes ongoing states, habitual actions, or background descriptions (Hacía sol — It was sunny). In a narrative, you need both: the imperfect sets the scene and the preterite moves the story forward. Practise writing short paragraphs about past events that naturally combine both tenses. Spanish listening can be challenging because of speech speed and elision (words running together). Build your listening stamina with authentic Spanish media — RTVE, podcasts like 'News in Slow Spanish', or short videos with Spanish subtitles. In the exam, use the reading time before each recording to study the questions and predict what vocabulary you might hear. For writing at Higher tier, the examiners reward variety in structures and vocabulary. Don't use the same opinion phrase repeatedly — vary between 'creo que', 'en mi opinión', 'me parece que', 'a mi juicio'. Similarly, vary your connectives beyond 'y', 'pero', and 'porque' — use 'sin embargo' (however), 'por lo tanto' (therefore), 'además' (furthermore), and 'por un lado... por otro lado' (on one hand... on the other).
