Single GCSE Vocational Science with Industry-Focused Practical Skills

WJEC GCSE Applied Science (Single Award) is a single GCSE qualification offering the same vocational, application-focused approach as the Double Award but in a more compact format. It suits students who want practical science understanding alongside a broader subject mix. The qualification is assessed through a written examination (Unit 1: Science in the Workplace, 1 hour 30 minutes) and a controlled assessment unit (Unit 2: Science to Support Our Lifestyles). Unit 1 covers science as it applies to workplaces including healthcare, manufacturing, environmental monitoring, and laboratory settings. Unit 2 involves supervised practical work where students investigate a scientific question and report their findings. Both Foundation (grades G–D) and Higher (grades D–A*) tiers are available, each carrying 50% of the total marks. The content emphasises how scientific understanding supports everyday life and industry, including topics such as health and safety in scientific workplaces, quality control, and environmental responsibility. This archive contains 51 resources from Summer 2017 to Summer 2023.

Workplace Science Contexts and Structuring Controlled Assessment Evidence

Unit 1 questions always embed science within workplace scenarios. Practise reading workplace-based case studies and identifying the underlying scientific principles. Questions might describe a food factory's quality control procedures and ask you to explain the science behind temperature control, or present a hospital's sterilisation protocols and ask about micro-organisms and disinfection. For the controlled assessment, structure is everything. Present your investigation as a clear scientific report with distinct sections. Your variables (independent, dependent, and controlled) must be explicitly stated. Your method should be detailed enough that someone could repeat your experiment. Present data in well-formatted tables and appropriate graphs, and your conclusion should directly link back to your original hypothesis with reference to specific data points. Learn the key health and safety considerations for scientific workplaces — risk assessments, COSHH regulations, and standard operating procedures. These are frequently tested and carry straightforward marks if you know the terminology.
