Enterprise, Finance, and the Welsh Business Landscape at GCSE Level

WJEC GCSE Business examines business concepts through two complementary units. Unit 1 (Business World) covers enterprise, business planning, marketing, human resources, and operations management. Unit 2 (Business Perceptions) focuses on financial management, external influences on business, and business growth, requiring students to analyse business scenarios and make strategic decisions. Both units are assessed through written examinations, each lasting approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 50% of the total marks. Questions range from short-answer knowledge recall to extended case study analysis requiring evaluation and judgement. The specification draws on Welsh business examples alongside UK and international contexts. Students study how Welsh government policy affects businesses through bodies like Business Wales, how local economic conditions shape business decisions in different regions of Wales (from urban Cardiff to rural Powys), and how Welsh businesses compete in national and international markets. The qualification connects business theory to the lived economic reality of Wales's diverse communities. This archive contains 45 resources spanning Summer 2012 to Summer 2023, covering both current and legacy specification papers.

Case Study Analysis and Applying Business Theory to Real Scenarios

WJEC Business papers are built around case study scenarios. Before answering any questions, read the entire case study carefully and underline key information: business size, market position, financial data, and challenges. The case study contains clues that you must use in your answers — generic responses that ignore the specific business described will not score well. For calculation questions, learn the key formulae: revenue = price × quantity, profit = revenue − costs, gross profit margin (%), net profit margin (%), and break-even = fixed costs ÷ (selling price − variable cost per unit). Always show your formula, substitution, and answer with correct units. Even if your arithmetic goes wrong, the formula and substitution earn method marks. Extended response questions require evaluation, not just description. For a question like 'Should this business expand?', don't just list advantages and disadvantages — weigh them against each other using evidence from the case study. A strong answer acknowledges that the best decision depends on specific circumstances: 'Given the business's limited cash reserves (mentioned in the case study), expansion funded by borrowing carries significant risk...' Revise the distinction between internal and external factors affecting business. Internal factors (management decisions, staffing, product quality) are within the business's control. External factors (economic conditions, legislation, competition, technology) are not. Questions often ask you to assess which type of factor has greater influence — this requires judgement, not a definitive answer.
