Digital Literacy, Data Management, and Technology in Modern Wales

WJEC GCSE Digital Technology is a qualification designed specifically for the Welsh curriculum, focusing on digital literacy, data management, and the practical application of digital technologies. Unlike Computer Science, which emphasises programming and computational theory, Digital Technology focuses on how digital systems are used in society, organisations, and everyday life. Unit 1 (The Digital World) is a written examination testing students' knowledge of digital devices, data and information, networks and connectivity, cybersecurity, and the legal and ethical implications of digital technology. Unit 2 and Unit 3 involve controlled assessment tasks where students apply digital skills to real-world problems — creating digital solutions using databases, spreadsheets, web development, and multimedia tools. The specification covers practical digital competencies that are increasingly essential in the modern workplace: managing and analysing data, understanding how networks operate, protecting digital systems from cyber threats, and using digital tools responsibly and effectively. The Welsh context emphasises how digital technology supports public services, businesses, and communities across Wales. This is a relatively new qualification with a small but growing archive of 3 resources from Summer 2023.

Understanding Data Types, Network Topologies, and Cybersecurity Fundamentals

Unit 1 covers a broad range of digital technology topics. Focus on understanding rather than memorisation: know how different digital devices work (input, processing, output, storage), how data is stored and transmitted, and how networks connect devices. Be able to explain the difference between data and information, and how raw data is processed into useful information. Cybersecurity questions test both technical knowledge and awareness of human factors. Learn specific types of cyber threat (malware, phishing, ransomware, social engineering) and the corresponding technical and organisational countermeasures. Understand the importance of strong passwords, encryption, firewalls, and regular software updates. For the controlled assessments, practice with real digital tools: create relational databases with queries, build spreadsheets with formulas and charts, and develop simple web pages. The assessments test your ability to solve a problem using appropriate digital tools, so focus on selecting the right tool for the task and presenting your solution clearly.
