Condensed PE Qualification for Broader Curriculum Flexibility

WJEC GCSE Physical Education (Short Course) is worth half a GCSE, providing a condensed route through physical education theory and practice. It covers the same core content areas as the full GCSE PE but in less depth, making it suitable for students who want a formal PE qualification without dedicating two full option blocks to the subject. Unit 1 (Introduction to Physical Education) is a written examination covering the same theoretical content as the full course — anatomy and physiology, health and fitness, and socio-cultural factors — but with a shorter paper and reduced content expectations. Unit 2 assesses practical performance in physical activities. The Short Course qualification shares its assessment structure with the full GCSE PE, with the same emphasis on connecting theoretical knowledge to practical sporting performance. It counts as half a GCSE in school performance tables and provides evidence of physical education understanding for students whose main interests lie in other subject areas. This archive contains 12 resources from Summer 2018 to Summer 2023.

Core PE Theory Essentials and Maximising Marks in a Shorter Paper

The Short Course covers the same theoretical principles as the full course but in a shorter exam. This means every mark matters more — you cannot afford to lose marks on basic recall questions. Ensure you know the key anatomy (major bones, muscles, and joints), the components of fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, speed, power, agility, balance, coordination, reaction time), and the main training methods. Focus your revision on the highest-value topics: the effects of exercise on the body systems (increased heart rate, cardiac output, breathing rate, blood redistribution), the principles of training (SPORT: Specificity, Progression, Overload, Reversibility, Tedium), and the social factors influencing participation in physical activity (gender, age, disability, ethnicity, socio-economic factors). For practical assessment, choose your strongest activities and ensure your performances demonstrate clear technical competence. Even in a short course, the practical assessment expects genuine sporting ability, not just participation.
