Welsh Perspectives on History and Source Evaluation Across Three Thematic Units

WJEC GCSE History offers a distinctive approach that integrates Welsh and British perspectives across its study units. The specification is built around thematic studies that trace developments over long periods, combined with depth studies of specific historical episodes. Unit 1 assesses two studies in depth — students study one period from a range including Germany 1919–1991, the USA 1929–2000, or Russia 1905–1991, alongside one thematic study such as Changes in Health and Medicine c.1340 to the present day, or Changes in Crime and Punishment c.1500 to the present day. Unit 2 focuses on a period study covering a shorter timeframe in greater depth. Unit 3 offers thematic options including The Development of Warfare c.1250 to the present day, and Changes in Patterns of Migration c.1500 to the present day. Welsh history is woven throughout the specification — the impact of industrialisation on Wales, Welsh migration patterns, and the distinctive Welsh experience of social reform feature alongside broader British and world history. Source evaluation is central to the WJEC approach, with substantial marks allocated to analysing the utility, reliability, and purpose of historical sources. This archive contains 111 resources from Summer 2018 to Summer 2023 across all unit options.

Source Evaluation Technique and Writing Structured Explanations of Historical Change

Source questions carry significant marks in WJEC History. For utility questions ('How useful is this source...'), always evaluate both the content (what does it tell us?) and the provenance (who wrote it, when, why?). Never dismiss a source as 'biased and therefore useless' — all sources are useful to a historian, even biased ones, because the bias itself reveals attitudes and viewpoints of the period. For the thematic studies, create timeline summaries showing key developments across the whole period. The examiners test your ability to identify patterns of change and continuity over time. For example, in 'Changes in Health and Medicine', you should be able to trace the shift from supernatural to scientific explanations, identifying key turning points (the Black Death, Jenner's vaccination, the NHS). Use specific factual knowledge — dates, names, statistics — to support your arguments. WJEC mark schemes for extended writing reward structured responses. Use the PEEL framework: Point (state your argument), Evidence (provide specific historical facts), Explanation (analyse how the evidence supports your point), Link (connect back to the question). Three well-developed PEEL paragraphs with a conclusion will score higher than six undeveloped assertions. For Welsh-specific content, know how developments in industry, health, education, and social reform affected Wales specifically. The Merthyr Rising of 1831, the Rebecca Riots, the creation of the NHS by Aneurin Bevan — these Welsh connections are expected in your answers where relevant.
