Twenty Core Studies and Applied Options: OCR's Research-Centred Psychology Specification

OCR A-Level Psychology (H567) is distinctive in its core studies approach β€” rather than teaching psychology topic by topic (social, cognitive, biological), it builds understanding around 20 specific research studies that students must know in detail. These studies span the full range of psychological perspectives and are then revisited through thematic lenses in the exam. Paper 1: Research Methods (H567/01, 2 hours, 90 marks, 30%) examines the methodology used in psychological research. Content covers: experimental design (laboratory, field, natural, quasi-experiments); self-report methods (questionnaires, interviews); observational research; correlational analysis; case studies; types of data (quantitative, qualitative); sampling methods; ethical guidelines (BPS Code of Ethics); data analysis (descriptive statistics, inferential testing, hypothesis testing); and the reporting of psychological investigations. Paper 2: Psychological Themes Through Core Studies (H567/02, 2 hours, 105 marks, 35%) tests knowledge of the 20 core studies organised into five psychological themes: social (obedience, conformity, bystander behaviour); cognitive (memory, attention, perception); developmental (attachment, moral development); biological (brain lateralisation, genetics); and individual differences (psychopathology, personality). Questions require detailed knowledge of each study's aims, procedure, findings, and conclusions, plus the ability to evaluate methodology and draw thematic connections. Paper 3: Applied Psychology (H567/03, 2 hours, 105 marks, 35%) requires students to choose two from four applied options: Issues in mental health; Criminal psychology; Environmental psychology; or Sport and exercise psychology. Each option applies psychological theories and research to real-world contexts.

Knowing Studies Inside Out and Applying Research Methods Under Exam Conditions

The core studies approach means you must know each of the 20 studies in genuine depth β€” not just a summary, but the specific details that examiners ask about. For Milgram's obedience study, for instance, you need: the exact experimental setup (the 'teacher-learner' paradigm), the voltage levels and verbal prods used, the quantitative findings (65% administered maximum shock), the qualitative observations (signs of extreme stress), the ethical criticisms, the variations conducted, and how it connects to the social approach. Create study cards with this level of detail for all 20 studies. Research methods questions in Paper 1 are frequently set in novel contexts β€” you will be given a description of an unfamiliar study and asked to identify variables, evaluate the design, suggest improvements, or analyse data. Practise by reading psychology research abstracts and identifying: the IV and DV (or variables in correlational designs), the experimental design, potential confounding variables, strengths and weaknesses of the methodology, and whether the conclusions are justified by the findings. The applied options in Paper 3 require you to connect theoretical psychology to practical applications. In Criminal Psychology, for example, you must link theories of criminal behaviour (biological, social learning, cognitive) to practical issues like offender profiling, prison effectiveness, and jury decision-making. The marks go to students who explicitly bridge theory and application rather than writing theoretical essays or purely practical descriptions. Inferential statistics appear in Paper 1 β€” know when to use each test (chi-squared for nominal data, Mann-Whitney for ordinal/interval independent measures, Wilcoxon for ordinal/interval repeated measures) and how to interpret results using significance levels and critical values tables. These are some of the most predictable marks in the specification.
