Engaging with Contemporary Hispanic Society Through Four Integrated Language Skills

AQA AS Spanish (specification 7691) develops proficiency in Spanish through thematic study of contemporary Hispanic society, examining social issues that affect Spain and the wider Spanish-speaking world. The 39 resources include past papers, audio files, and speaking stimulus cards. The combined skills paper (1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 45%) opens with listening comprehension based on recorded passages β€” interviews, news reports, conversations β€” relating to aspects of Hispanic society. Questions test understanding of gist, specific detail, inference, and speaker attitude. The reading section presents authentic Spanish texts with comprehension questions, a translation passage from Spanish into English requiring accuracy of meaning and natural expression, and a summary task. The range of text types includes journalistic writing, online commentary, and literary prose. The writing component (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 25%) evaluates productive written competence across two tasks. The translation from English into Spanish tests grammatical control β€” verb conjugation, subjunctive usage, ser/estar distinction, por/para, preterite/imperfect aspect. The extended essay (approximately 300 words in Spanish) addresses one of four studied sub-themes: los valores tradicionales y modernos (traditional and modern values), los jΓ³venes de hoy (young people today), el mundo laboral (the world of work), and el impacto de los Γdolos (the impact of role models). Paper 3: Speaking (12–14 minutes, 60 marks, 30%) begins with a stimulus card discussion where the student responds to a visual or textual prompt related to a studied sub-theme, followed by wider conversation about contemporary Hispanic society. The examiner probes depth of knowledge and ability to express and justify opinions spontaneously in Spanish. The specification covers aspects of contemporary Hispanic society including family structures, youth culture, digital media, celebrity influence, workplace equality, and traditional versus modern social values β€” providing a window into the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Preterite vs Imperfect, Subjunctive Triggers, and Building Hispanic Cultural Knowledge

The preterite/imperfect distinction is tested heavily in AS Spanish because it has no direct parallel in English. The preterite (hablΓ©, comΓ, vivΓ) describes completed single actions or events with defined endpoints. The imperfect (hablaba, comΓa, vivΓa) describes ongoing states, habitual actions, or background descriptions in the past. In narrative writing, the imperfect sets the scene while the preterite advances the action: 'LlovΓa cuando lleguΓ©' (it was raining when I arrived). Practise recognising and producing both aspects in context β€” isolated conjugation drills are less useful than writing paragraphs that require both. The subjunctive appears at AS level primarily after expressions of doubt, emotion, wish, and influence (WEIRDO categories: Wishes, Emotions, Impersonal expressions, Recommendations, Doubt, OjalΓ‘). Learn the triggers: quiero que + subjunctive, es importante que + subjunctive, dudo que + subjunctive, para que + subjunctive. The most common AS-level error is using the indicative after these triggers or avoiding subjunctive constructions entirely. Examiners explicitly look for subjunctive usage as evidence of grammatical range β€” use it confidently. Cultural knowledge strengthens both writing and speaking performance. Instead of generic statements about 'Spanish culture', draw on specific knowledge: Spain's 2005 same-sex marriage legislation and its social impact, the role of social media in youth activism in Latin America, the economic consequences of Spain's 2008–2014 recession on youth employment (over 50% youth unemployment at its peak), or the influence of reggaetΓ³n artists on young Hispanic identity. Specific factual knowledge makes your arguments persuasive rather than superficial. For the speaking exam, practise thinking in Spanish rather than translating from English in real time. Mental translation produces stilted, slow responses with English word order. Build your confidence by recording yourself discussing each sub-theme for 3–4 minutes, then listening back to identify repeated errors. Focus on connectives that add sophistication: sin embargo (however), no obstante (nevertheless), por un lado... por otro lado (on the one hand... on the other), a pesar de que (despite the fact that).
