Contemporary French Society Through Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking

AQA AS French (specification 7651) develops communicative competence in French through engagement with contemporary French-speaking society. The 33 resources cover all three examined components including audio tracks for listening practice. Paper 1 (1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 45%) integrates listening, reading, and writing into a single examination that tests both receptive comprehension and productive language use. The listening section presents recorded passages β€” news bulletins, interviews, discussions β€” on topics relating to French society, and asks comprehension questions in both French and English. The reading section provides authentic French texts (newspaper articles, blog posts, literary extracts) with comprehension questions, a translation passage from French into English, and a summary task in English. Questions test understanding of specific detail, inference, deduction of meaning from context, and the ability to identify tone and purpose. The writing paper (1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 25%) contains two distinct tasks. The first is a translation of a short passage from English into French, testing grammatical accuracy and lexical range. The second is an extended essay in French of approximately 300 words on one of four topics studied: les aspects positifs d'une sociΓ©tΓ© diverse (the positive aspects of a diverse society), quelle vie pour les marginalisΓ©s? (life for the marginalised), comment on traite les criminels (how criminals are treated), and la famille en voie de changement (the changing family). Paper 3: Speaking (12–14 minutes, 60 marks, 30%) consists of a discussion of a stimulus card related to one of the four studied sub-themes, followed by a general discussion of further aspects of French-speaking society. The examiner asks follow-up questions testing the student's ability to sustain a conversation, defend opinions, and respond spontaneously to challenges. All three papers assess across four Assessment Objectives: understanding spoken language (AO1), understanding written language (AO2), manipulating the language in speech and writing (AO3), and demonstrating knowledge and understanding of French-speaking society (AO4).

Listening Strategy, Translation Accuracy, and Sustaining Spoken French Under Pressure

Listening comprehension at AS level requires specific strategies. On the first hearing, focus on the overall topic and tone β€” don't try to catch every word. On the second hearing, listen for the specific details the questions target. Common traps include distractors (the speaker mentions multiple numbers or dates but only one answers the question), negatives and qualifiers (ne...pas, ne...que, seulement), and speaker attitudes that contradict surface-level statements (irony, reluctance, hesitation). Practise with past paper audio files at normal speed β€” slowing down recordings during revision creates a false sense of security. Translation into French is the most technically demanding task at AS level. Common errors include incorrect adjective agreement (une grande maison but un grand jardin), confusion of prepositions (penser Γ  but rΓͺver de), incorrect use of depuis with the present tense for ongoing situations (j'habite ici depuis trois ans, not j'ai habitΓ©), and failure to use the subjunctive after conjunctions of doubt or emotion (bien que, pour que, avant que). After translating, re-read your French version as a standalone text β€” does it read naturally, or does it sound like English word order with French vocabulary? For the writing essay, structure is essential. Open with a clear introduction that signals your thesis (not a rhetorical question or a dictionary definition). Develop three or four paragraphs, each advancing a distinct point with specific evidence β€” named examples from French society, statistics from French media, or references to specific policies (la loi sur la laΓ―citΓ©, les ZEP, le PACS). Conclude by synthesising your argument, not by repeating your introduction. The speaking exam rewards candidates who can sustain conversation beyond prepared responses. Your examiner will probe with follow-up questions designed to take you beyond rehearsed material. Prepare by practising with someone who can challenge your opinions in French β€” if you say 'je pense que la diversitΓ© est positive', be ready to respond when asked 'mais quels sont les dΓ©fis concrets de l'intΓ©gration dans les banlieues?' Develop three or four detailed talking points per sub-theme, but practise discussing them flexibly rather than memorising scripts.
