International GCSE Mathematics: The World's Most Popular iGCSE Maths Qualification

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics is the single most widely entered iGCSE subject globally, sat by hundreds of thousands of students in over 80 countries each year. The current specification (4MA1) replaced the legacy 4MA0 and uses 9–1 grading aligned with the UK reformed GCSE scale. The qualification is tiered. Foundation tier (grades 5–1) consists of Paper 1F (non-calculator, 2 hours, 100 marks) and Paper 2F (calculator permitted, 2 hours, 100 marks). Higher tier (grades 9–4) has the same two-paper structure: Paper 1H (non-calculator, 2 hours) and Paper 2H (calculator, 2 hours), each carrying 100 marks. The legacy 4MA0 specification added Papers 3H and 4H for Higher candidates, so older past papers show a four-paper Higher structure. Content spans number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability. Higher-tier topics include calculus of polynomials, set notation and Venn diagrams applied to probability, function notation, vectors, and circle theorems — areas that go beyond the typical UK GCSE syllabus. No formulae sheet is provided; all required formulae must be memorised. Because the International GCSE runs in both January and June sessions, the archive of 720 resources is exceptionally deep, offering more practice material than almost any other mathematics qualification at this level.

Maximising 720 Resources: A Strategic Approach to iGCSE Maths Practice

With 720 resources spanning both the 4MA0 and 4MA1 specifications, you have an extraordinary volume of practice material. Start by distinguishing the two specs: 4MA0 papers (pre-2018) used a different mark allocation and had four Higher papers; 4MA1 papers match the current two-paper format. Focus your timed practice on 4MA1 papers, but use 4MA0 questions for additional topic-by-topic drill. Paper 1 (non-calculator) demands fluent mental arithmetic, prime factorisation, and the ability to manipulate fractions, surds, and algebraic expressions without technological assistance. Practise these skills daily — even ten minutes of non-calculator arithmetic each morning compounds over weeks. Paper 2 permits a calculator, but many questions are designed so that a calculator gives only marginal advantage; the real challenge is setting up the problem correctly. For Higher-tier candidates, the final questions on each paper are deliberately stretch questions targeting grades 8 and 9. These often combine multiple topic areas — simultaneous equations with geometry, probability with set theory, or algebraic proof. Attempt these even when they feel out of reach: partial marks from correct method steps still count, and repeated exposure builds the pattern recognition needed for exam-day performance.
