Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Gujarati (4GU1) provides a formal assessment of reading and writing proficiency in Gujarati, the official language of Gujarat state and one of India's 22 scheduled languages. One written paper, set and marked externally by Pearson, determines the full grade. It spans three assessment areas: comprehension of Gujarati texts, production of formatted written responses, and sustained free composition.
Candidates read a selection of Gujarati texts spanning functional, literary, and informational registers. Questions progress from straightforward retrieval — locating facts and identifying opinions — to more demanding inference and evaluation tasks. The directed writing section requires candidates to produce a response in a specified format (letter, report, article, or diary entry), while the extended composition invites sustained creative or discursive writing.
The examination uses the Gujarati script throughout; candidates are expected to write all responses in Gujarati. Graded 9–1, the qualification is recognised internationally and is predominantly taken by heritage speakers in the UK, East Africa, and the broader Gujarati diaspora. It serves as evidence of formal bilingual competence for university admissions and professional contexts.

Script Accuracy, Register Awareness, and Connective Variety: Excelling in iGCSE Gujarati
Gujarati script has a distinctive feature that often catches candidates out: unlike Devanagari, it does not use a headline (shirorekha) connecting the tops of characters. This means individual character shapes must be precisely formed to avoid ambiguity — particularly for visually similar pairs like ક/ફ or ધ/ઘ. Practise your handwriting under timed conditions to ensure clarity.
Reading comprehension marks are split between retrieval and inference. For retrieval questions, locate the relevant section of the text and paraphrase rather than copying entire sentences — examiners reward concise, targeted answers. For inference questions, identify what the text implies through word choice, tone, or context, and explain your reasoning.
Directed writing requires you to match the conventions of the specified format. If the question asks for a formal letter, use the correct salutation (શ્રીમાન/શ્રીમતી), an appropriate opening line, and a conventional closing. Missing these structural elements costs marks even when the content is strong.
In extended composition, connective variety is a reliable way to move from mid-band to top-band marks. Instead of relying on અને (and) and પણ (but), deploy connectives like તેથી (therefore), જો...તો (if...then), જોકે (although), and ત્યારબાદ (subsequently). Prepare a list of ten versatile connectives and practise weaving them into your practice essays.
