About Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

International GCSE (iGCSE) is a globally recognised qualification designed for international schools and UK independent schools. It covers the same core content as GCSE but is available worldwide and offers both January and June exam series. Most subjects consist of 2–3 written papers, and some offer a choice between coursework and exam-only routes.

🌍

Where is iGCSE taken?

International GCSEs are taken in over 100 countries worldwide. They are popular in British international schools, UK independent schools, and among home-educated students. They are recognised by UK universities as equivalent to GCSEs.

📅

When are iGCSE exams?

International GCSEs have two exam windows: January and May/June. This flexibility allows schools to schedule exams to suit their academic calendar, and students can resit in a shorter timeframe than GCSE.

📄

How do iGCSEs differ from GCSEs?

iGCSEs are exam-only for most subjects (no controlled assessment). They are not regulated by Ofqual and cover a broader international curriculum. Some UK state schools previously offered iGCSEs but most have now returned to GCSE.

International GCSE Grading Scale

International GCSEs are graded on the 9–1 scale (same as GCSE) or A*–G depending on the exam board and specification. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE now uses the 9–1 grading system for most subjects.

How to Use Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Past Papers Effectively

Past papers are the single most effective revision tool. Here is a step-by-step approach to get the most out of every Pearson Edexcel International GCSE paper you practise.

1

Start with the mark scheme

Before attempting a paper, read through the mark scheme for a similar paper. This shows you exactly what examiners look for — the phrasing, the level of detail, and the structure of a top-band answer.

2

Simulate real exam conditions

Set a timer, put away your notes, and complete the full paper in one sitting. This builds exam stamina, reduces anxiety, and reveals gaps you would miss when working through questions casually.

3

Self-mark ruthlessly

After finishing, mark your own work using the official Pearson Edexcel mark scheme. Be honest — do not give yourself marks for “close enough” answers. Note every mark you dropped and why.

4

Read the examiner report

Pearson Edexcel publishes examiner reports that reveal common mistakes and what top-scoring students did differently. These insights are often more valuable than doing another paper.

International GCSE Exam Tips

1

Use both January and June papers

Unlike GCSE, iGCSE has two series per year — meaning more past papers to practise with. Papers from both sessions are equal in difficulty and style.

2

Formulae are often given

Many iGCSE specifications provide a formulae sheet at the front of the paper. Familiarise yourself with the sheet so you can find formulas quickly during the exam — but still understand how to use them.

3

Watch for international contexts

iGCSE questions often use international contexts and examples. Do not be thrown off by unfamiliar place names or units — the underlying concepts are the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams and past papers.

Are International GCSEs accepted by UK universities?

Yes. All UK universities accept International GCSEs as equivalent to GCSEs. For most purposes, including meeting entry requirements (e.g. Maths and English at grade 4+), they are treated identically. Some very competitive courses may prefer standard GCSEs taken in UK state schools, but this is rare.

What is the difference between iGCSE and GCSE?

The main differences are: iGCSEs are exam-only (no coursework/NEA), have two exam windows (January and June), are available worldwide, and are not regulated by Ofqual. The content and difficulty are broadly comparable, though some iGCSE specifications have a more international focus.

Can I take iGCSE in the UK?

Yes. UK independent schools and some academies offer iGCSEs. UK state schools can still offer them but they are no longer included in school league tables (performance measures). Home-educated students can also sit iGCSEs at registered exam centres.

Are iGCSE past papers compatible with GCSE revision?

Partially. The content overlaps significantly, but the question style and mark schemes can differ. iGCSE papers are useful for extra practice but should not replace GCSE-specific past papers if you are sitting GCSE exams.
