International GCSE History: Source Analysis, Depth Studies, and Global Historical Perspectives

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE History (specification 4HI1, replacing legacy 4HI0) is designed with an international student body in mind, offering topic options that extend beyond British history to include the USA, the Middle East, China, the USSR, and the wider twentieth century. The qualification consists of two papers. Paper 1 — Depth Studies (1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks, 50%) — offers a choice of topic options including the Development of a Dictatorship: Germany 1918–45, a World Divided: Superpower Relations 1943–72, and the Origins and Course of the First World War. Each depth study tests detailed factual knowledge alongside source analysis — students evaluate primary and secondary sources for utility, reliability, and purpose. Paper 2 — Investigations and Breadth Studies (1 hour 30 minutes, 60 marks, 50%) — combines a historical investigation (assessing the ability to weigh evidence and reach a substantiated judgement) with a breadth study covering a longer period. Options include Changes in Medicine, the USA 1917–41, and China 1900–89. No coursework or controlled assessment is required. The qualification is graded 9–1, and the 100-resource archive covers both specification versions.

Source Evaluation and Extended Writing: Scoring Highly in iGCSE History

Source questions carry significant weight and follow a predictable structure. You will be asked to describe what a source says, explain its usefulness to a historian studying a particular event, and evaluate how far two sources support a given interpretation. For usefulness questions, consider three dimensions: the content of the source (what it tells us), its provenance (who created it, when, and why), and its limitations (what it omits or distorts). Practise this framework with past-paper sources until it becomes second nature. Extended writing questions on Paper 2 ask you to construct a sustained argument. The mark scheme rewards answers that present multiple points with supporting evidence, consider alternative viewpoints, and reach a substantiated conclusion. Plan your essay in three paragraphs — two supporting the statement with evidence, one counter-argument — plus a conclusion that weighs the evidence and takes a clear position. Chronology matters in iGCSE History. Many questions ask you to explain causation or trace change over time. Memorise key dates for your chosen depth study — not every date, but the pivotal moments that structure the narrative. When explaining why something happened, present causes in a logical order (long-term structural causes first, then short-term triggers) rather than listing them randomly.
