Year 12 Pure Mathematics with a Choice of Applied Strand

OCR AS Level Mathematics A (H230) is a standalone qualification covering the Year 12 mathematics curriculum and assessed across two written papers. Students choose between a Mechanics applied strand and a Statistics applied strand β€” each paper pairing combines Pure Mathematics content with the chosen application. Paper 1: Pure Mathematics and Mechanics (H230/01) and Paper 2: Pure Mathematics and Statistics (H230/02) are each 1 hour 30 minutes, worth 75 marks, and contribute equally to the final grade. Students sit one of these two papers depending on the applied pathway taken during their course. The Pure Mathematics content covered in both papers includes: algebra and functions (quadratics, simultaneous equations, inequalities, polynomials, the factor theorem), coordinate geometry in the Cartesian plane (straight lines, circles), sequences and series (arithmetic and geometric progressions, the binomial expansion), trigonometry (sine and cosine rules, radian measure, trigonometric identities), exponentials and logarithms, calculus (differentiation of polynomials, trigonometric and exponential functions; integration as the reverse of differentiation and for finding areas under curves), and statistical sampling and data representation. The Mechanics strand covers kinematics (constant acceleration equations, velocity-time graphs), forces and Newton's laws (resultant forces, friction, connected particles), and moments. The Statistics strand covers statistical measures, probability (including conditional probability and Venn diagrams), the binomial distribution, and hypothesis testing using the binomial model. Large data sets are a feature of the Statistics pathway, requiring candidates to interpret pre-release data in context.

Integrating Pure and Applied Skills Within a Single Sitting

The OCR AS Mathematics A papers test Pure and Applied content within a single examination, so transitions between topic areas happen mid-paper. Avoid the trap of saving all applied questions until the end β€” work through the paper in order, as applied questions are often worth fewer marks and provide a confidence boost mid-paper. For the Pure content, the most heavily tested areas at AS Level are quadratic methods (completing the square, discriminant conditions, solving by factorisation), differentiation (finding gradients, identifying stationary points, determining their nature using the second derivative), and integration (area under a curve, always adding the constant of integration for indefinite integrals). Each of these topics appears on virtually every past paper. In the Statistics strand, the large data set questions require familiarity with the pre-release data before the exam β€” you cannot learn the data during the paper. Practise identifying features of the data set (outliers, seasonal patterns, correlations between variables) and be ready to contextualise your statistical calculations within the scenario the data represents. For Mechanics, draw a clear force diagram for every question involving forces before attempting calculations. Label all forces (weight, normal reaction, friction, tension) with their directions. Many errors arise from omitting a force or applying Newton's second law along the wrong direction. For friction questions, always check whether the object is on the point of moving (F = ΞΌR) or moving freely (kinetic friction, F = ΞΌR throughout).
