Business Functions, Financial Analysis, and the External Business Environment

OCR AS Level Business (H031) develops students' understanding of how businesses operate, compete, and respond to their environments through two examined components. Both papers draw on real business contexts and require students to apply business concepts and analytical tools to scenarios presented in the examination. Component 1: Business Activity, Marketing and People (H031/01, 1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks) covers: the nature of business activity (business objectives, forms of ownership, stakeholders, and business ethics), marketing (market research, segmentation, the marketing mix โ€” product, price, place, and promotion โ€” and digital marketing), and human resources (organisational structures, motivation theories, leadership styles, workforce planning, and employment law). Questions draw on case study material presented in the paper and require the application of theoretical frameworks to specific business scenarios. Component 2: Operations, Finance and External Influences (H031/02, 1 hour 30 minutes, 70 marks) covers: operations management (capacity utilisation, productivity, quality management, lean production and waste minimisation, supply chain management), financial analysis (income statements, balance sheets, working capital management, break-even analysis, investment appraisal using payback period and average rate of return), and external influences (the economic environment โ€” business cycles, interest rates, exchange rates, and government policy โ€” and the competitive environment). Resource booklet data in both papers includes financial accounts, market data, and business case studies requiring quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Financial Ratios, Marketing Mix Application, and Business Case Study Technique

Break-even analysis is a reliable source of marks if approached correctly. The break-even quantity is calculated as Fixed Costs รท Contribution per unit, where Contribution per unit = Selling price โˆ’ Variable cost per unit. Margin of safety = Actual or budgeted output โˆ’ Break-even output. Profit at any output level = (Actual output โˆ’ Break-even output) ร— Contribution per unit. When drawing a break-even chart, label both axes clearly, draw the total costs line (starting from fixed costs on the y-axis) and the total revenue line (starting from the origin), and mark the break-even point precisely. Label the margin of safety as a horizontal distance between the break-even point and the current output. Motivation theory questions are almost always on the paper and require precise application. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is the most widely known but should be applied carefully โ€” not every worker's motivation is driven by self-actualisation needs. Taylor's scientific management (piece-rate pay, standardised tasks) is most applicable to routine manual work. Herzberg's two-factor theory distinguishes hygiene factors (salary, working conditions, job security โ€” which prevent dissatisfaction if adequate, but do not motivate) from motivators (achievement, recognition, responsibility โ€” which genuinely motivate). For a question about a demotivated workforce, identify whether the issue is hygiene-related (poor pay, uncomfortable conditions) or motivator-related (lack of autonomy, poor recognition) before recommending a solution. For evaluation questions ('assess the impact of X on the business'), always consider both the short-term and long-term effects, and acknowledge uncertainty or context-dependence. A price reduction may boost sales volume in the short term but reduce profit margins and position the brand as low-quality in the longer term โ€” this nuanced, conditional reasoning is what earns top marks.
