Landscape Systems and Contemporary Geographical Debates at AS Level

OCR AS Level Geography (H081) examines the physical and human geography of landscapes and places through two components, each supported by a resource booklet containing data, maps, photographs, and written materials that form the basis for examination questions. Component 1: Landscape and Place (H081/01, 1 hour 30 minutes, 66 marks) explores the physical and human characteristics of landscapes and how they interact. Physical landscape content covers one of four options: Coastal Landscapes (wave action, erosion and deposition processes, landform development, coastal management strategies); Glaciated Landscapes (glacial erosion and deposition, periglacial processes, glacial landforms and their recognition); Dryland Landscapes (weathering, wind erosion, desert landforms, water in arid environments); and River Landscapes (drainage basin hydrology, fluvial processes, channel morphology, and flood management). Each option requires detailed knowledge of the physical processes at work, the landforms they create, and the management challenges they present. Component 2: Geographical Debates (H081/02, 1 hour 30 minutes, 66 marks) addresses contemporary issues through a human-physical interface: climate change (causes, consequences, mitigation and adaptation strategies), disease dilemmas (the epidemiological transition, global health patterns, and disease management), exploring oceans (the importance of oceans in the climate system, ocean governance, and human exploitation of marine resources), and food and water security (global patterns of food production, water access, food systems, and sustainability). Questions draw directly on the resource booklet, which contains case study material, statistical data, maps, and contemporary sources.

Resource Booklet Interpretation, Case Study Application, and Geographical Skill

Resource booklet questions carry significant marks and reward candidates who read the materials carefully before attempting answers. Before writing any response, spend at least five minutes reading each resource and annotating: identify any numerical trends, geographical patterns, anomalies in the data, and how the resources relate to each other. Questions that ask you to 'use evidence from the resource' must be answered with specific data β€” a statement like 'the graph shows an increase' scores fewer marks than 'the graph shows that global mean sea level rose by 3.3 mm per year between 1993 and 2020.' For physical landscape process questions, answer in terms of the sequence of processes rather than listing individual processes in isolation. For coastal erosion: wave energy is the driving force; hydraulic action (pressure of water compressing air in cracks), abrasion (sandpaper-like erosion by sediment in waves), attrition (sediment particles colliding and wearing each other down), and corrosion (chemical dissolution of carbonate rock) are the mechanisms; and the resultant landforms (wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks) are the outcomes. Structure your response around this cause-process-outcome sequence. For Geographical Debates, case studies must be specific and current. In climate change questions, the IPCC's AR6 (2021) projections provide credible data β€” a 1.5Β°C threshold of warming is projected to be reached by the early 2030s under current emission trajectories. In food and water security questions, data from the UN FAO, UNICEF, and the World Bank provides authoritative evidence. Avoid vague case studies ('a country in Africa') in favour of named examples ('Ethiopia's vulnerability to drought is compounded by population growth and land degradation, as documented by the UN OCHA').
