Developing Reading Comprehension and Short-Form Writing at Entry Level 2

WJEC Entry Level English 2 builds on the foundational literacy skills of Entry Level 1, assessing learners who can now read simple texts with understanding and write short, clear pieces of communication. Entry Level 2 marks a transition from purely recognising and copying to actively comprehending and composing. Reading at Entry Level 2 involves understanding the main points in a short text of several paragraphs, identifying specific information stated in the text, recognising the purpose of a text (to inform, to instruct, to persuade), understanding some implicit meaning (what a text suggests rather than states directly), and following straightforward written instructions or directions. Texts are written in clear, standard English with familiar vocabulary and deal with everyday situations. Writing at Entry Level 2 requires the learner to write several sentences forming a short, organised piece of communication: a brief letter, a short note, a simple description, or a basic list with explanatory sentences. Sentences should be grammatically complete, punctuated correctly with capital letters and full stops (and beginning to use commas and question marks), and organised so that ideas follow in a logical order. Spelling of high-frequency and commonly used words should be mostly accurate. Entry Level 2 represents a significant step in literacy development and demonstrates that the learner can both understand and produce functional written English independently — the foundation for all further progression in English literacy.

Finding Main Points, Writing Clear Sentences, and Text Organisation

At Entry Level 2, reading questions ask you to identify the main point and specific details. The main point of a paragraph is usually stated in the first or last sentence of that paragraph — these are the topic sentence and the concluding sentence. Practise reading a short paragraph and writing one sentence that summarises what the whole paragraph is about — this develops the comprehension skill that "main point" questions test. For writing tasks at Entry Level 2, each sentence should express one complete idea. Avoid very long sentences that chain together with "and...and...and..." — break them into shorter, clearer units. "I went to the shop. I bought bread and milk. The total cost was £3.50" is clearer and earns more credit than "I went to the shop and I bought bread and milk and the total cost was £3.50." Organisation matters at Entry Level 2: the writing should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. A short letter to a neighbour should start with a greeting and reason for writing, continue with the key information, and end with a polite close. Even simple writing demonstrates effective communication when it follows this structure consistently.
