Triple Science in One Qualification: The Edexcel Certificate in Science
The Edexcel Certificate in Science (Double Award) provides broad coverage of all three science disciplines — biology, chemistry, and physics — in a single qualification, offering two GCSEs-worth of credit for students who study science as a combined subject.
The Biology Paper covers the cell biology and organism physiology content found in the separate Biology Certificate, but in a slightly condensed form suited to students studying combined science. Topics include cell structure and organisation, the human body systems (digestion, circulation, respiration), genetics, ecology, and disease.
The Chemistry Paper covers atomic structure, bonding, the Periodic Table, chemical calculations, reactions of metals and acids, electrolysis, organic chemistry, rates of reaction, and analytical techniques, again calibrated to the combined science level.
The Physics Paper covers forces and motion, energy, waves and the electromagnetic spectrum, electrical circuits, electromagnetism, radioactivity, and astrophysics at the level expected in combined science, including calculation-heavy questions across all topic areas.
The 68 resources include question papers and mark schemes for all three subject papers.

Cross-Science Connections and Exam Time Management for Combined Science
Combined science students cover three disciplines, so effective time allocation in revision is essential. Map your revision calendar across the three papers giving roughly equal time to each unless your performance data from past papers shows a clear weakness. Use interleaving — alternating between biology, chemistry, and physics topics in a single revision session — to strengthen long-term retention.
Many topics in combined science have cross-disciplinary connections worth exploiting. The chemistry of enzymes (catalysts, activation energy, substrate concentration) connects to the biology of digestion and cellular respiration. Energy concepts from physics (conservation, thermodynamics) underpin photosynthesis and respiration efficiency in biology. Identifying these connections helps you understand topics more deeply and answer application questions that draw on multiple areas.
Calculation questions across the physics and chemistry papers carry significant marks. Each calculation typically carries 3–5 marks, split between selecting the correct equation, substituting correct values, and computing the correct answer with correct units. Even if you cannot reach the final numerical answer, ensure you write the correct equation and attempt the substitution — method marks are frequently available.
