Forces, Energy, and Waves: The Edexcel Certificate in Physics
The Edexcel Certificate in Physics provides a thorough grounding in the physical sciences, covering mechanics, energy, electricity, waves, and modern physics, developing both the quantitative skills and the conceptual understanding expected at this level.
Paper 1 covers forces and motion (Newton's laws, momentum, force-distance and force-velocity calculations, pressure), energy (work, power, kinetic and gravitational potential energy, the conservation of energy), waves (properties of transverse and longitudinal waves, reflection, refraction, total internal reflection, electromagnetic spectrum, sound), and electricity and magnetism (circuit calculations, electrical power, electromagnetism, the motor effect, electromagnetic induction, transformers).
Paper 2 covers radioactivity and atomic physics (atomic structure, alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, nuclear equations, half-life, fission and fusion), astrophysics (the Solar System, stars and their lifecycle, the expanding universe, red shift, the Big Bang), space exploration, and energy resources (fossil fuels, nuclear power, renewable energy sources, global energy demand).
The 74 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Equation Manipulation and Nuclear Physics for Edexcel Certificate Physics
Calculation questions in Paper 1 frequently require you to rearrange equations before substituting values. Practise triangle method and algebraic rearrangement for all key equations: v = fλ, P = IV, E = QV, F = ma, p = mv, W = Fs. Ensure you can identify the correct equation from a given scenario and convert units correctly (kJ to J, km/h to m/s, kΩ to Ω) before substituting.
Electricity circuit questions may involve series and parallel combinations. For series circuits: total resistance = sum of individual resistances; current is constant throughout. For parallel circuits: 1/total R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ...; voltage across each branch is the same. Practise combining these rules to solve multi-branch circuit problems, particularly when some branches are in series within a parallel arrangement.
Nuclear physics questions in Paper 2 require understanding of radioactive decay equations. For alpha decay, the mass number decreases by 4 and the atomic number by 2. For beta-minus decay, the atomic number increases by 1 and the mass number is unchanged. Know the relative ionising power and penetrating power of each type (alpha: most ionising, least penetrating; gamma: least ionising, most penetrating) and the shielding materials required. Half-life calculations may involve multiple half-lives — practise working systematically through successive halving.
