Mandarin Proficiency Across Three Skills: The Edexcel Certificate in Chinese

The Edexcel Certificate in Chinese (Mandarin) assesses listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Standard Mandarin Chinese, covering both simplified character literacy and communicative production appropriate to the qualification level. The Listening paper presents recordings of native Mandarin speakers in a range of registers and settings β€” news reports, conversations, announcements, and interviews β€” and assesses students' ability to extract information, infer meaning, and identify attitudes. Questions are set in English for most tasks, with some requiring a Chinese-language response. The Reading paper uses authentic Chinese texts in simplified characters: news articles, social media posts, letters, advertisements, and narrative extracts. Students respond to comprehension questions, demonstrate understanding of vocabulary in context, and answer higher-mark questions that require responses written in Chinese. The Writing paper assesses controlled written production: a structured response to a visual stimulus, an extended piece of writing in Chinese characters, and a translation passage from English into Chinese. The translation tests knowledge of key grammatical structures β€” aspect markers (δΊ†, θΏ‡, 着), measure words, and the ba construction β€” as well as character precision. The 37 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Character Literacy and Grammar Structures for Edexcel Certificate Chinese

Character recognition and production is central to the Reading and Writing papers. Prioritise learning the most frequently occurring characters in authentic texts by topic area: technology, education, environment, society, and daily life. Use spaced repetition flashcard software (Anki with HSK decks, for example) to build character recognition efficiently. When writing characters, pay close attention to stroke order β€” it affects character recognition by examiner markers and builds muscle memory that improves speed. Grammar structures tested in the Writing translation include the use of aspect markers. δΊ† (le) marks a completed action or a change of state; θΏ‡ (guΓ²) marks past experience; 着 (zhe) marks a continuous state or action in progress. Errors in aspect marker placement or omission are common and costly. Practise translating English past tense sentences into Chinese, deciding which aspect marker (if any) is appropriate based on the meaning of the sentence. Listening comprehension in Mandarin benefits from regular exposure to authentic Mandarin audio. Listen to standard Mandarin (Putonghua) broadcasts from CCTV or China Radio International. Pay attention to the distinction between similar-sounding syllables: tones in Mandarin are phonemic (mā, mΓ‘, mǎ, and mΓ  are four different words). In the examination, context usually disambiguates tonal confusion β€” focus on the message rather than agonising over individual syllables.
