Horse Health, Anatomy, and Nutrition in BTEC Equine Management

BTEC Equine Management develops the specialist knowledge and practical skills required for careers in equine care, stable management, riding instruction, and equestrian business. Unit 1 — Horse Health and Husbandry covers the daily care and management of horses: stable design and bedding systems, grooming and foot care, vaccination and parasite control programmes, identifying signs of health and ill-health, first aid and veterinary liaison, and the principles of responsible equine welfare. Unit 3 — Horse Anatomy and Physiology examines the structure and function of the equine body: skeletal and muscular systems (with particular attention to limb anatomy and the stay apparatus), the digestive system and its adaptations for hindgut fermentation, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in the context of exercise physiology, and the reproductive system. Unit 5 — Equine Nutrition focuses on the nutritional requirements of horses across different life stages and workloads. Students study the major nutrient classes, digestibility and energy metabolism, forage quality assessment, ration formulation, and the relationship between nutrition and health conditions such as laminitis, tying-up, and gastric ulcers. The 31 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Equine Physiology and Ration Formulation for BTEC Equine Management

Anatomy questions in Unit 3 frequently require accurate labelling of skeletal diagrams or descriptions of how specific structures function. Pay particular attention to the lower limb: know the bones (cannon, splint, pastern, coffin), tendons (superficial and deep digital flexor), and ligaments (suspensory, check) and how they interact during weight-bearing and movement. The stay apparatus (how horses sleep standing up) is a popular exam topic. Digestive physiology is tested in both Unit 3 and Unit 5. Know the equine hindgut fermentation process — how the caecum and colon harbour microbial populations that digest structural carbohydrates — and why abrupt diet changes can destabilise this ecosystem and cause colic or laminitis. This mechanistic understanding helps you answer 'explain' questions that go beyond simple description. Nutrition ration formulation in Unit 5 may include calculation questions: computing an approximate daily forage requirement based on bodyweight (typically 1.5–2% of bodyweight in dry matter), or balancing a ration by adjusting forage to concentrate ratios. Practise these calculations and know the nutrient profiles of common feedstuffs: grass hay, haylage, chaff, sugar beet, and compound feeds.
