Child Development Theory and Early Years Practice in BTEC CPLD

BTEC Children's Play, Learning and Development prepares students for careers in early years education and childcare by combining developmental psychology with practical understanding of high-quality play provision and inclusive practice. Unit 1 β€” Child Development traces physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional development from birth to eight years. Students study developmental milestones, the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Bowlby, and Bandura, and consider how biological and environmental factors influence developmental outcomes. Unit 2 β€” Play in Early Childhood examines the characteristics and value of different play types: heuristic play, imaginative role play, sensory play, outdoor and risky play. Students analyse how practitioners design and resource play environments to meet children's developmental needs. Unit 3 β€” Supporting Children considers safeguarding frameworks, special educational needs and disability (SEND) provision, transitions, and the role of multi-agency working in promoting children's wellbeing. Students develop skills in observation, documentation, and reflective practice. The 36 resources include question papers and mark schemes.

Developmental Milestones and Safeguarding Frameworks for BTEC CPLD

Child development questions frequently present a case study and ask you to identify developmental concerns or plan appropriate activities. Memorise the normative developmental milestones by age (6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years) and practise spotting atypical patterns. Frame your answers using correct terminology: 'gross motor skills', 'object permanence', 'centration', 'egocentrism'. Play theory questions in Unit 2 reward students who can match theoretical perspectives to specific play types. Vygotsky's zone of proximal development supports the case for adult-scaffolded play; Froebel and Bruce advocate free-flow play; Smilansky describes stages of sociodramatic play. Know which theorist supports which practice. Safeguarding and SEND content in Unit 3 requires familiarity with the Children Act 2004, the SEND Code of Practice, and Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance. Scenario questions may ask you to explain what action a practitioner should take β€” structure your answer around identify β†’ record β†’ refer β†’ review.
