From Foundation to Fit-Out: BTEC's Comprehensive Construction Programme
BTEC Construction and the Built Environment develops the technical knowledge and project management skills required for careers spanning civil engineering, architectural technology, quantity surveying, and building services.
Unit 1 — Construction Technology examines the structural principles and construction methods used across residential, commercial, and civil engineering projects. Students study substructures, superstructures, roofing systems, cladding, and sustainable construction techniques.
Unit 3 — Science and Materials in Construction investigates the physical and mechanical properties of materials commonly used on site: timber, masonry, concrete, steel, and synthetic materials. Students apply scientific principles to understand material selection, loading, and failure.
Unit 4 — Construction Project Management introduces the frameworks and tools used to plan, coordinate, and control building projects: programme planning, risk management, site logistics, health and safety legislation, and contract types including NEC and JCT forms.
Unit 5 — Building Services Engineering covers the design and installation principles of mechanical and electrical systems: HVAC, plumbing, electrical distribution, lighting, fire protection, and sustainable energy technologies.
The 67 resources include question papers and mark schemes for all external units.

Technical Drawing Interpretation and Construction Science for BTEC Built Environment
Construction Technology questions often require you to read and interpret drawings, site plans, and specifications. Practise identifying construction elements from cross-sections: damp-proof courses, insulation positions, cavity walls, and roof timber configurations. Know the difference between traditional strip foundations, raft foundations, and pile foundations and which ground conditions suit each.
Materials science questions in Unit 3 frequently involve calculations — compressive strength, thermal conductivity (U-values), and loading. Review the formulas for stress, strain, and Young's modulus, and practise interpreting stress-strain graphs to identify elastic limit, yield point, and ultimate tensile strength.
Project management scenarios in Unit 4 may ask you to construct or interpret a Gantt chart, identify critical path activities, or evaluate the impact of a delay. Practise reading programme schedules critically, and know the key differences between NEC and JCT contract forms in terms of risk allocation and payment mechanisms.
