Psychological Approaches, Research Methods, and Applied Psychology Across Four Units

Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level Psychology introduces students to the major psychological approaches and their applications, emphasising research methodology as the foundation of psychological knowledge. The 208 resources provide extensive practice across all four units, from social and cognitive psychology through to applied and synoptic assessment. Unit 1 (WPS01): Social and Cognitive Psychology examines two foundational approaches. Social psychology covers obedience (Milgram), conformity (Asch), prejudice (Sherif, Tajfel), and social identity theory. Cognitive psychology addresses memory models (multi-store model, working memory model), eyewitness testimony reliability, and cognitive development. Students learn to evaluate these approaches through their strengths, limitations, and ethical implications. Unit 2 (WPS02): Biological Psychology, Learning Theories, and Research Methods covers biological explanations of behaviour (brain structure and function, neurotransmitters, hormones, the fight-or-flight response, and biological explanations of aggression and schizophrenia), classical and operant conditioning (Pavlov, Skinner), social learning theory (Bandura), and a comprehensive introduction to research methods including experimental design, sampling techniques, ethical guidelines, data analysis, and statistical testing. Unit 3 (WPS03): Applications of Psychology applies psychological knowledge to real-world contexts — clinical psychology (definitions of abnormality, explanations of mental health conditions, treatments including CBT, psychodynamic therapy, and biological treatments), criminological psychology (theories of criminal behaviour, eyewitness testimony, offender profiling), and child psychology (attachment theory, deprivation and privation, day care effects). Unit 4 (WPS04): Clinical Psychology and Psychological Skills is the synoptic unit, requiring students to apply knowledge from all previous units to evaluate psychological research, design studies, and analyse contemporary issues in psychology. Questions draw on the full specification and reward candidates who can make connections across approaches and topics.

Exam Command Words

Command wordWhat the examiner expects
DescribeGive a detailed account of a study, theory, or concept — include specific details such as procedure, findings, and conclusions
EvaluateAssess the strengths and limitations of a study, theory, or approach — consider methodology, ethics, validity, and generalisability
ExplainGive psychological reasons for behaviour or findings — link theory to evidence and show understanding of cause and effect
CompareIdentify similarities and differences between approaches, studies, or explanations — use specific evidence from each
DiscussPresent arguments and evidence from multiple perspectives — evaluate the relative merits and reach a balanced conclusion
DesignPlan a psychological investigation — specify hypothesis, IV, DV, design, sample, procedure, ethics, and data analysis
CalculatePerform a statistical calculation — show working, state the critical value, and interpret the result in context

Study Evaluation, Methodological Critique, and the Extended Response in Psychology

IAL Psychology mark schemes reward methodological literacy above all else. For every key study, you must know: the aim, the method (design, sample, procedure), the results (specific findings with statistics where relevant), and the conclusions. But the highest marks go to candidates who can evaluate the study — was the sample representative? Were there demand characteristics or experimenter bias? Was the procedure ecologically valid? Could the results be explained by confounding variables? Were the ethical guidelines followed? Research methods questions appear in every unit and account for approximately 25% of total marks. Know the difference between experiments (lab, field, natural, quasi), correlations, observations, self-reports (questionnaires, interviews), and case studies. For each, know its strengths and limitations. Understand independent measures, repeated measures, and matched pairs designs. Be able to identify and explain: independent variable, dependent variable, extraneous variables, operationalisation, reliability, validity (internal, external, ecological), and generalisability. Statistical testing requires both conceptual understanding and practical skill. Know when to use each test: chi-squared (nominal data, independent groups), Mann-Whitney (ordinal data, independent groups), Wilcoxon (ordinal data, related data), Spearman's rho (ordinal data, correlational). Understand significance levels (p ≤ 0.05), one-tailed vs two-tailed hypotheses, and how to interpret critical value tables. Practise calculating these tests from data — don't just memorise the formula, understand the logic. For extended response essays (typically 8–12 marks), structure is essential. Open with a brief statement of the psychological concept or debate. Present the first argument with evidence from at least one key study. Provide a counter-argument with evidence from an alternative approach. Evaluate the methodological strengths and weaknesses of the evidence on both sides. Conclude with a balanced judgement that acknowledges the complexity of the issue.
