OCR Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies (J829) is a Level 1/Level 2 qualification providing a broad-based introduction to sport from multiple perspectives: contemporary social issues, leadership and performance, outdoor activities, and the media's relationship with sport. It is ideal for students with a general interest in sport who want a qualification that develops both practical and analytical skills. Four internally assessed units cover distinct dimensions of sport. Contemporary Issues in Sport examines sport through a social lens: participation inequalities by gender, ethnicity, disability, and socioeconomic status; the role of the media in shaping sporting culture; doping and cheating in sport; commercialisation and the influence of sponsorship; and government policy on sport and physical activity. Students are expected to form and argue opinions on controversial issues using evidence. Performance and Leadership in Sports Activities is a practical unit: students organise and lead a sports activity (warm-up, skill practice, cool-down) for peers, demonstrating communication skills, adaptability, and subject knowledge. Leadership quality is assessed against criteria including clarity of instruction, safety management, and the ability to support participants of different abilities. Increasing Awareness of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities introduces students to the range of outdoor activities (orienteering, rock climbing, water sports, cycling, camping) and develops knowledge of equipment, safety procedures, environmental impact, and the specific leadership skills required in outdoor settings. Sport and the Media analyses the symbiotic relationship between sport and media organisations: broadcasting rights, media coverage bias, the influence of television money on professional sport, social media and direct athlete communication, and gender inequality in sports media coverage.
