Digital Literacy and Modern Technologies: OCR Cambridge Nationals IT (J836)
OCR Cambridge Nationals in IT (J836) is a Level 1/Level 2 qualification developing digital literacy, data skills, and understanding of emerging digital technologies. It is designed for all students who use digital technology regularly and want to develop their understanding of how digital tools work and how they can be used productively.
The qualification's three internally assessed units address different dimensions of digital competence. IT in the Digital World covers the landscape of digital technology: hardware types (computers, tablets, smartphones, IoT devices), software categories (productivity, creative, communication, utility), cloud services, the internet and world wide web, online safety and digital wellbeing, digital accessibility, and the environmental impact of digital technology (energy consumption of data centres, e-waste, digital carbon footprint).
Data Manipulation Using Spreadsheets develops practical data skills using spreadsheet software. Students learn to organise and format data, use built-in functions (SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT, IF, VLOOKUP), create charts and graphs, build pivot tables for data summarisation, and apply conditional formatting and data validation. These are workplace-ready skills valued across virtually all industries.
Using Augmented Reality to Present Information is the qualification's most distinctive unit, reflecting the growing role of AR in education, retail, healthcare, and entertainment. Students learn what AR is, how it differs from VR and mixed reality, the tools used to create basic AR experiences, and how AR can be used to communicate information effectively to different audiences.
