What is Unit Conversion?

Unit conversion is the process of expressing a measurement in different units without changing its actual value. For example, 1 kilometre and 1000 metres are the same distance — just expressed in different units.

The key to unit conversion is the conversion factor — a ratio that equals 1. Since multiplying by 1 doesn't change a value, multiplying by a conversion factor changes the units but not the quantity.

The Conversion Factor Method

value (new unit) = value (old unit) × conversion factor

Example: 5 miles × 1.609 km/mile = 8.045 km

Dimensional Analysis

Dimensional analysis is a systematic method for converting units by treating them as algebraic quantities that can be cancelled. This technique is essential in GCSE and A-Level science.

Example: Convert 72 km/h to m/s

72 km/h × (1000 m / 1 km) × (1 h / 3600 s)
= 72 × 1000 / 3600 m/s
= 20 m/s

Notice how the km and h units cancel, leaving just m/s. This works for any chain of conversions.

Key insight: To convert between metric prefixes, just count the steps on the staircase and move the decimal point that many places.

Common Mistakes in Unit Conversion

Avoid these frequent errors that cost students marks in GCSE and A-Level exams.

1. Multiplying when you should divide

✗ Wrong

5 km to miles: 5 × 1.609 = 8.045 miles

✓ Correct

5 km to miles: 5 ÷ 1.609 = 3.107 miles

Miles are bigger than km, so you need fewer of them. Always check: is the target unit bigger or smaller?

2. Confusing US and UK gallons

✗ Wrong

10 gallons = 37.85 L (assuming US) when the question means UK

✓ Correct

10 UK gallons = 45.46 L | 10 US gallons = 37.85 L

A UK gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon. In the UK, pints of milk and beer are 568 mL, not 473 mL.

3. Forgetting the offset in temperature conversions

✗ Wrong

0°C × 1.8 = 0°F

✓ Correct

0°C × 1.8 + 32 = 32°F

Temperature conversion requires both multiplication AND addition. Water freezes at 0°C but 32°F — the scales have different zero points.

4. Confusing mass and weight

✗ Wrong

Converting 10 kg directly to Newtons by dividing

✓ Correct

Weight = mass × g → 10 kg × 9.81 = 98.1 N

Kilograms measure mass. Newtons measure force (weight). Use W = mg to convert between them.

5. Getting metric prefix magnitudes wrong

✗ Wrong

1 km = 100 m (thinking kilo = hundred)

✓ Correct

1 km = 1,000 m (kilo = thousand)

kilo = 1000, hecto = 100, deca = 10. Getting this wrong makes your answer off by a factor of 10.

6. Not converting to base units first in chains

Converting miles directly to centimetres in one step

miles → metres → centimetres (two simple steps)

Going via the base unit (metres for length, grams for mass) makes each step straightforward and easy to verify.

Step 1: Recall that 1 mile = 1.609 km

Step 2: Multiply: 5.2 × 1.609 = 8.3668

Step 3: Round to 3 significant figures: 8.37 km

Check: 5.2 miles should be more than 5.2 km (since km are smaller). 8.37 > 5.2 ✓

GCSEConvert 98.6°F to Celsius

Step 1: Write the formula: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Step 2: Substitute: °C = (98.6 - 32) × 5/9

Step 3: Calculate: °C = 66.6 × 5/9 = 66.6 × 0.5556 = 37°C

This is normal body temperature — a useful benchmark to memorise.

A-LevelConvert 340 m/s to km/h

Step 1: Convert metres to kilometres: divide by 1000

Step 2: Convert seconds to hours: multiply by 3600 (60 × 60)

Step 3: Combined: 340 × 3600 / 1000 = 340 × 3.6 = 1224 km/h

Shortcut: to convert m/s to km/h, just multiply by 3.6. This is the speed of sound at sea level!

A-LevelConvert 2.5 kWh to joules

Step 1: Recall: 1 kWh = 1 kW × 1 hour = 1000 W × 3600 s

Step 2: Since 1 W = 1 J/s: 1 kWh = 1000 × 3600 J = 3,600,000 J

Step 3: Therefore: 2.5 kWh = 2.5 × 3,600,000 = 9,000,000 J = 9 MJ

This is a common A-Level physics conversion. Remember: kWh is an energy unit (power × time), not a power unit.
